To conclude, this sampling of the literature of risk perception, the comments of Covello, 1981 may be summarized. Surveys have been of small specialized groups - generally not representative of the population as a whole. There has been little attempt to analyze the effects of ethnicity, religion, sex, region age, occupation and other variables that may affect risk perception. People respond to surveys with the first thing that comes to mind and tend to stick to this answer. They provide an answer to any question asked even when they have no opinion, do not understand the question or have inconsistent beliefs. Surveys are influenced by the order of questions, speed of response, whether a verbal or numerical respon.se is required and by how the answer is posed. Few Studies have examined the relationships between perceptions of technological hazards and behavior which seems to be influenced by several factors such as positive identification with a leader, efficacy of social and action, physical proximity to arenas of social conflict. [Pg.13]

Prior to these food safety scares, theories of risk have been constructed with reference to environmental and technological hazards, such as nuclear power, while neglecting food issues. In this last decade, however, attention... [Pg.104]

Clearly, Suzanne is in no way aberrant. Something is at work on her that puts the lawn before the dog, which allows her to reconcile potential evidence of more general risk, and which forces her to live simultaneously with her lawn and her anxiety. Well-educated, affluent, and fully cognizant of a technological hazard, she chooses to maintain her current practices rather than seek out alternatives. [Pg.3]

The ECRI Institute s Top 10 Health Technology Hazards for 2014 places neglecting change management in networked devices and systems at number seven [2]. The report cites several examples of incidents including an update to an electronic health record which resulted in the loss of date and time data from radiology reports. [Pg.288]

In this paper we presented a new version of social vulnerability indexes to natural and technological hazards that takes into account, beyond the standard analysis of exposure or biophysical vulnerability, social resilience and infrastructural support capabilities. [Pg.452]

The questionnaire also included questions regarding the respondents knowledge of alerts (meteorological and civil protection), their response to those alerts, and their opinion on how adequate or inadequate the mass media coverage of natural and technological hazards is. Finally, a group of Likert-type scales that focused on the respondents trust level in... [Pg.1195]

Planning During planning activities, leaders identify natural hazards, technological hazards, and terrorist threats, or workplace violence situations. Planning addresses the risks of each hazard or threat, including the likelihood of occurrence and the potential severity. Severity considers loss of life, loss or damage to property, injuries, business interruption, and other factors. [Pg.417]

It was estimated in the year 1980 that industrialized countries devoted 1-2% of GDP to the prevention and reduction of pollution (Kates, 1986). In the 1990s, it was estimated that the social cost of coping with technological hazards in the United States was 7-12% of GDP, with about half devoted to hazard management and the remainder used to take care of damage to people, material, and the environment (Warner et al., 2004). It is estimated that the United States produces over 260 million tons of hazardous waste... [Pg.306]

Natural or technological threats is therefore used to define low-probability but serious events (compared to natural or technological hazards), while human threats (e.g. cyber or terrorist threats) refer to the intent of creating harm or damage (RGS, 2013). [Pg.52]
