Up to 90% of the total quality cost is due to failure, both internal and external, with around 50% being the average (Crosby, 1969 Russell and Taylor, 1995 Smith, 1993). A survey of UK manufacturing companies in 1994 found that failure under the various categories was responsible for 40% of the total cost of quality, followed by appraisal at 25%, and then prevention costs at 18%. This is shown in Figure 1.6. Of the companies surveyed, 17% were unsure where their quality costs originated, but indicated that these costs could be attributable to failure, either internally or externally. 

The improvement of the quality of a design is seen as the primary need of industry, but to facilitate this we need appropriate methods for predicting quality and evaluating the long-term quality of an engineer s design (Morup, 1993 Russell and Taylor, 1995 Shah, 1998 Taguchi et al., 1989). The binary pulsar PSR1913+16. In 1974 Russell Hulse and Joseph Taylor discovered a very special pulsar PSR1916+13. A striking feature that was revealed just after its discovery was a large shift of the pulses rate with a period of a few hours. This was explained by Doppler shift, so PSR1916-H13 is in fact a binary system in which a pulsar orbits about the center of mass of the system. Immature soil samples have S Te values that are indistinguishable from lunar rocks, whereas submature and mature soils have 5 Fe values that are greater than those of lunar rocks, and S Te values are positively correlated with Ig/FeO values (Fig. 12). Lunar regolith samples in general tend to have heavy isotopic compositions as compared to lunar rock samples, as demonstrated by isotopic analyses of O, Si, S, Mg, K, Ca, and Cd (Epstein and Taylor 1971 Clayton et al. 1974 Russell et al. 1977 Esat and Taylor 1992 Humayun and Clayton 1995 Sands et al. 2001 Thode 1976). The origin of isotopic compositions that are enriched in the heavy isotopes has been presumed to reflect sputtering by solar wind and vaporization, where preferential loss of the lighter isotope to space occurs. In contrast to previous isotopic studies, the Fe isotope compositions measured in the Lunar Soil Characterization Consortium samples can be related to a specific phase based on the positive correlation in Ig/FeO and 5 Fe values (Fig. 12).

Proteins from extremophilic organisms, particularly thermophiles, have been the subject of intensive research in recent years. This work has been the subject of numerous reviews (Jaenicke and Bohm, 1998 Russel and Taylor, 1995 Vogt and Argos, 1997 Gerday et al., 1997 Somero, 1995), and we will make no attempt at an in-depth summary. We will confine ourselves to briefly stating the major trends identified thus far. Explaining these trends becomes complicated because the many weak interactions that determine enzyme stability and activity have complex temperature dependencies (see Section II). And evolution injects considerable confusion beyond the laws of physical chemistry.
