Tanks, Piping, and Pumps

Cast iron or steel pumps are recommended and can either be centrifugal, hermetic or those operating with solvent resistant mechanical seals. All vessels and intake lines, marked at the delivery point, should be clearly labelled with the name of the solvent. Regular, recorded inspection should be undertaken to ensure the integrity of the storage tank, pipes and pumps.

Piping and pumps used for transfer of the butanols can be made of the same metal as tanks. Centrifugal pumps with explosion-proof electric motor drives are recommended (34). 

Antimony alloys have many commercial applications. The metal makes its alloys hard and stiff and imparts resistance to corrosion. Such alloys are used in battery grids and parts, tank linings, pipes and pumps. The lead plates in the lead storage batteries constitute 94% lead and 6% antimony. Babbit metal, an alloy of antimony, tin, and copper is used to make antifriction machine bearings. Alloys made from very high purity grade antimony with indium, gallium and bismuth are used as infrared detectors, diodes, hall effect devices and thermoelectric coolers.

DSS Feed System. The DSS feed system consisted of an agitated, 55-gallon polyethylene supply tank for the sewage sludge and standard piping and pumps. The feed system supplied two air-sparged tubes located 25 cm and 46 cm above the distributor plate in the EHE. Each tube contained six, 2.36 mm diameter holes drilled horizontally (3 on each side) through which DSS and air were fed. Because the clay and lime additives used in the study had a tendency to settle out in the supply tank, a recirculation line was also installed. 

HTO circulation system (circulation tank, pump, expansion tank, pipelines and valves instrumentation and alarms) and suitable insulation and cladding on the hot oil tanks, piping, and valves. 

Typical applications include chemical storage tanks, pickling tanks, pipe and fittings, plating tanks and various accessories such as agitators, pumps, etc. 

ACETANILIDE. CHj CO NH C. Acetanilide has been produced in aluminum alloy equipment in eluding tanks, pipes, valves, pumps, reflux condensers. vapor lines, heating coils, evaporators and reaction vessels. See also Ref (Dp. 124, (3) p. 147, (7)p. 3. 

Liquid chemical feed systems consist of storage tanks (with containment for hazardous chemicals), chemical piping, and metering pumps (with calibration equipment). Control systems monitor the level of chemical in the tanks, pressure and flow in the piping, and pump settings. A schematic of a typical liquid chemical feed system is shown in Figure 7-1. 

The delivery of liquid is generally effected in either tank cars or trailers, and the transfer is either by pump or vapor pressure. Tank cars may have a round trip of about fifteen days and trailers about two days. In both transport and transfer of liquid, a minimum amount of heat leak is unavoidable. In the case of the tank car, the static heat leak alone may account for about 3 per cent loss in liquid. Added to this there would be a substantial loss in flashing during transfer via poorly insulated or warm piping and pumping.
