Fire testing used to develop automatic sprinkler system design criteria has shown that other factors are important to determine the overall fire hazard of containerized liquids. These factors include the liquid properties, such as liquid burning rate, fire point, specific gravity, water solubility, and viscosity, as well as the container design and size. These important factors have been incorporated into the sprinkler system design tables in Section 4-8 of the 1996 edition of NFPA 30. [Pg.16]

Sprinkler system design criteria in standards published by the NFPA and FM were developed without the use of draft curtains and automatic heat and smoke vents. FM does not require heat and smoke vent installation. However, FM Loss Prevention Data Sheet 8-9, Storage of Class 1,2, 3, 4, and Plastic Commodities, recommends that heat and smoke vents be manually actuated in sprinklered warehouses, if installed. Conversely, IRI recommends automatic heat and smoke vents in sprinklered buildings except where early-suppression fast-response (ESFR) sprinkler systems are used. [Pg.98]

Reactor internals design fabrication and installation are covered by rules given in Section in of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, Subsection NG, Core Support Structures. Core support structures are those structures or parts of structures, which are designed to provide direct support or restraint of the core, within the reactor pressure vessel. Before Subsection NG was published. Subsection NB of the ASME Code was used as a guideline for the development of vendor-specific internals system design criteria. The rules for reactor internals design are covered in Article NG-3000. [Pg.40]

Let S(jd) and r(/o) denote the amplitude ratios of S and r, respectively. The maximum values of the amph-tude ratios provide useful measures of robustness. They also serve as control system design criteria, as discussed below. Define Ms to be the maximum value of 5(7co for all frequencies ... [Pg.586]

Fluidity can be assumed to stay constant when scaling up an enzyme-substrate system, provided that solutions of identical composition are used for the laboratory-scale model and the full-size plant design. Application of the design criterion in Eq. (19.36) assumes operation in the linear regime of transmembrane pressure AP up to about 1-2 bar, as described in Chapter, Section 8.5.1, Eq. (8.78), so that... [Pg.552]

The use of the Coanda effect is based on the desire to have a second passive momentum to speed up mixing in addition to diffusion [55, 163], The second momentum is based on so-called transverse dispersion produced by passive structures, which is in analogy with the Taylor convective radial dispersion ( Taylor dispersion ) (see Figure 1.180 and [163] for further details). It was further desired to have a flat ( in-plane ) structure and not a 3-D structure, since only the first type can be easily integrated into a pTAS system, typically also being flat A further design criterion was to have a micro mixer with improved dispersion and velocity profiles. [Pg.243]

Different types of lasers have been successfully employed to generate metal vapor. The minimum criterion is sufficient heating of the sample to produce a high density of metal vapor. The amount of vapor needed is determined by the overall system design, that is, how much of the supersaturated vapor can be converted into clusters. Optimization of the conversion of metal vapor to... [Pg.215]

It is evident that minimization of the degrees of freedom of the dienophile in the transition state is an important criterion for reaction selectivity. A unique catalyst system designed by Hawkins and coworkers takes advantage of two distinct binding interactions to rigidify the catalyst-substrate complex [65]. The aromatic alkyldichloroborane 13 is an effective cycloaddition catalyst for acrylate dienophiles (Scheme 15) [66] however, reports utilizing this catalyst are strictly confined to ester substrates with either cyclopentadiene or cyclohexadiene. [Pg.1128]

Assumption 3 was used because of the absence of an appropriate fatigue design criterion for the sulfur-asphalt pavement material. The fatigue life was evaluated on the ability of the four pavement systems to withstand an 18 kip axle load for 106 applications. [Pg.134]

In the first case, the structural description of over 100 thienyl- and furyl-benzimidazoles and benzoxazoles was multivariately characterized to identify three latent variables. A set of 16 informative molecules was derived thereafter on applying a central composite design criterion in these latent variables to all the available structures. The data were analyzed by a linear PLS model, which permitted the optimization of three structural features out of four. The fourth one, the substituent linked to the homocyclic ring of the bicyclic system was finally optimized by the CARSO procedure in terms of the substituents PPs, predicting two new compounds as possible optimal structures. Indeed, later analysis revealed the accuracy of these predictions. [Pg.32]

Paper walling is only one method among many available, but it cannot stand alone. The operation of an existing as well as a streamlined operation may be illustrated in many ways, inspired by formalized information and logistic architecture methods. The main objective of ensuring a lean and streamlined operation will have to be translated into system requirements and in turn a system design that enables the actual system to be built. A key success criterion is how well the outcome in the computer system design reflects a user-friendly and streamlined flow of operation and information in the paperless facility. [Pg.18]

Sufficient evidence of design, installation, verification and validation activities should be available prior to the assessment. The availability of sufficient evidence could itself be an assessment criterion. The evidence should represent the current/approved state of system design or installation. [Pg.20]

The procedure may well be explained using the fault tree of Fig. 9.8, which is based on Example 9.3. It deals with the analysis of a system which consists of two electrical pumps, each of which can be blocked on the pressure side by a valve. The task of the system is to transport a fluid. It suffices if one of the two pumps can work without obstruction (system design 2 x 1(X) %, loo2, one-out-of-two redundancy). This is the success criterion. [Pg.317]

In an attempt to deal with this irony, the Department of Defense introduced cost-as-an-independent-variable, or CAIV for short. This mouthful, developed in the math-proficient defense engineering community, means that cost is a design criterion on a par with technical capability. Under CAIV, a high-performing, but costly system no longer meets the specification. [Pg.313]

Target costing A strategic profit planning and cost management system that incorporates a strict focus on customer wants, needs, and values, and translates them into delivered products and services. A variation is using cost as a design criterion in product development. [Pg.555]

The criterion adopted in the CAREM is to make these systems as simple and reliable as possible. Reactor design makes it possible to have very simple safety systems. The small power to be removed during shutdown and emergencies, allows systems designed to operate in a passive way (no pumps required). [Pg.272]
