System beating

The cell coat of trypanosomes is covered with a single protein, which is the antigen to which the immune system responds. Every so often, however, by a process of genetic recombination (see Table 28-1), a few cells in the population of infecting trypanosomes switch to a new protein coat, not recognized by the immune system. This process of changing coats can occur hundreds of times. The result is a chronic cyclic infection the human host develops a fever, which subsides as the immune system beats back the first infection trypanosomes with changed coats then become the seed for a second infection, and the fever recurs. This cycle can repeat for weeks, and the weakened person eventually dies. [Pg.862]

A rival sound system, developed by General Electric and the Radio Corporation of America, put the soundtrack on the film itself, running it in a track next to the images. Since the pictures and their soundtrack were linked on the film, they could never get out of synchronization. This system was also easier to set up. After intense competition and many lawsuits over patent rights, this system beat the sound-on-a-disc system. [Pg.435]

Mobiltherm 603. Mobiltberm 603, manufactured by Mobil Oil Corp., is a high paraffinic oil suitable for systems in which combined beating and cooling cycles are used. It functions efficiently at both low and high temperatures and withstands repeated thermal cycling. [Pg.503]

Technetium-99m teboroxime is a myocardial imaging agent and is excreted primarily by the hepatobiliary system. It is rapidly taken up by the myocardium and mosdy washes out within 30 minutes. Imaging protocols are performed immediately after injection. The product is a lyopbili ed mixture of boronic acid, dioxine, and other excipients, and the agent is formed with a beating step. [Pg.484]

Amine Cross-Linking. Two commercially important, high performance elastomers which are not normally sulfur-cured are the fluoroelastomers (FKM) and the polyacrylates (ACM). Polyacrylates typically contain a small percent of a reactive monomer designed to react with amine curatives such as hexamethylene-diamine carbamate (Diak 1). Because the type and level of reactive monomer varies with ACM type, it is important to match the curative type to the particular ACM ia questioa. Sulfur and sulfur-beating materials can be used as cure retarders they also serve as age resistors (22). Fluoroelastomer cure systems typically utilize amines as the primary cross-linking agent and metal oxides as acid acceptors. [Pg.236]

The lead-base babbitts ate based upon the lead—antimony—tin system, and, like the tin-base, have a stmcture of hard crystals ia a relatively soft matrix. The lead-base ahoys ate, however, mote prone to segregation, have a lower thermal conductivity than the tin-base babbitts, and ate employed genetahy as an iaexpensive substitute for the tin-base ahoys. Properly lined, however, they function satisfactorily as beatings under moderate conditions of load and speed. [Pg.62]

Microemulsions or solubilized or transparent systems are very important ia the marketing of cosmetic products to enhance consumer appeal (32,41). As a rule, large quantities of hydrophilic surfactants are required to effect solubilization. Alternatively, a combination of a solvent and a surfactant can provide a practical solution. In modem clear mouthwash preparations, for example, the flavoring oils are solubilized in part by the solvent (alcohol) and in part by the surfactants. The nature of solubilized systems is not clear. Under normal circumstances, microemulsions are stable and form spontaneously. Formation of a microemulsion requires Httle or no agitation. Microemulsions may become cloudy on beating or cooling, but clarity at intermediate temperatures is restored automatically. [Pg.294]

Slug flow must be avoided in all two-phase applications. The designer must be alert for two-phase flow developing in a system. In one case, absorber liquid going to a lower pressure stripper produced a two-phase mixture. The absorber stream entered the stripper in a line that was elled down onto the stripper tray. The two-phase mixture beat out a section of trays. A /4-in. protection plate was provided and this had a hole cut in it in two years. [Pg.315]

In addition to the MD method, a wealth of Monte Carlo methods is used also at the atomistic level [6]. They use essentially the same models, force fields, for polymers. Their main advantage, however, is that by introduction of clever moves one can beat the slow physical dynamics of the systems and can run through phase space much faster than by MD. These methods are still in their infancy, but will certainly become more important. [Pg.488]

Keep in mind that the pilot test may have taken more time than a comparable facility would need for installation once the system has been refined. At the same time, take care not to be unrealistic it s always better to beat a deadline than to miss it. [Pg.160]

For this computer system, the crossover point where direct SCF beats the conventional algorithm happens at around 120 basis functions ( N=7). This level may be lower for some vector processors. ... [Pg.33]

Most of the data used for compiling such maps have been obtained for the flow of water and air at near atmospheric temperature and pressure, and scaling factors have been introduced to extend their applicability to other systems. However, beating in mind the diffuse nature of the boundaries between the regimes and the relatively minor effect of... [Pg.184]
