Synthetic chemicals from ethanol,

Synthetic ethanol is now produced by hydration of ethylene. Ethanol is one of important chemicals. Though ethanol synthesis from H2/CO was extensively studied so far, there are a few reports about ethanol synthesis from H2/CO2. Recently, some efficient catalysts for ethanol formation from H2/CO2 were developed by Arakawa and his co-workers. [Pg.24]

Vanillin has been known as a flavouring substance since about 1816, and by 1858 the pure chemical had been obtained from ethanolic extracts of vanilla beans. It was not until 1872 that Carles established its correct formulation and in 1874, Tiemann and Haarmann reported it as 3-methoxy-4-hydroxy-benzaldehyde (Fig. 3.60). Finally, Reimer synthesized vanillin from guaiacol and thus proved its chemical structure. For many years, the most important source of vanillin was eugenol, from which it was obtained by oxidation. Today, the major portion of commercial vanillin is obtained by processing waste sulfite liquors, the rest through fully synthetic processes starting from guaiacol [21 ]. [Pg.368]

Because oil and gas ate not renewable resources, at some point in time alternative feedstocks will become attractive however, this point appears to be fat in the future. Of the alternatives, only biomass is a renewable resource (see Fuels frombiomass). The only chemical produced from biomass in commercial quantities at the present time is ethanol by fermentation. The cost of ethanol from biomass is not yet competitive with synthetically produced ethanol from ethylene. Second-generation biofuel technologies make use of a much wider range of biomass feedstock (e.g., forest residues, biomass waste, wood, woodchips, grasses and short rotation crops, etc.) for the production of ethanol biofuels based on the fermentation of lignocellulosic material, while other routes include thermo-chemical processes such as biomass gasification followed by a transformation from gas to liquid (e.g., synthesis) to obtain synthetic fuels similar to diesel.
