Because electrode measurements of O2 uptake can detect intra- and extracellular oxidase activity, this assay can be used to measure the respiratory burst elicited by soluble and particulate stimuli. What is somewhat surprising is that, during stimulation of neutrophils with agonists such as fMet-Leu-Phe, the activated O2 uptake profile is biphasic (Fig. 5.11c). A rapid burst of O2 uptake (which coincides with measurements of cytochrome c reduction) is followed by a more sustained activity of lower magnitude.

It is worth noting that the enzyme can be withdrawn and recycled by using supercritical CO2. The success of the polymerizations carried out in organic solvents stems directly from the sustained activity of several lipases in organic solvents. In this respect, it must be noted that water has a manifold influence on the course of the polymerization. On the one hand, water can initiate the polymerization. On the other hand, a minimum amount of water has to be bound to the surface of the enzyme to maintain its conformational flexibility, which is essential for its catalytic activity [94]. Lipase-mediated polymerization cannot therefore be achieved in strictly anhydrous conditions. 

Fosfestrol is indicated in the treatment of carcinoma of the prostate. It is a synthetic non-steroidal estrogen which is dephosphorylated to stilboestrol. Polyestradiol phosphate is an oestrogen with sustained activity that is exclusively used for prostate cancer. It is stored in tissues and slowly dephosphorylated to estrogen. 

The membrane-mimetic approach has the potential of providing superior size, morphology, and monodispersity control for ceramic particles. The relatively meager amount of published work in this area [826-834] (see Table 11) is rather surprising. Vigorous and sustained activities, inspired by biomineralization [15-18] and modeled on the incorporation of metallic, catalytic, and semiconducting particles into membrane-mimetic compartments, are fully expected. 

There are two major categories of desensitization of responses mediated by G protein-coupled receptors. Homologous desensitization refers to loss of responsiveness exclusively of the receptors that have been exposed to repeated or sustained activation by an agonist. Heterologous desensitization refers to the process by which desensitization of one receptor by its agonists also results in desensitization of another receptor that has not been directly activated by the agonist in question. 

Spinel oxides with a general formula AB2O4 (i.e. the so-called normal spinels) are important materials in industrial catalysis. They are thermally stable and maintain enhanced and sustained activities for a variety of industrially important reactions including decomposition of nitrous oxide [1], oxidation and dehydrogenation of hydrocarbons [2], low temperature methanol synthesis [3], oxidation of carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon [4], and oxidative dehydrogenation of butanes [5]. A major problem in the applications of this class of compound as catalyst, however, lies in their usually low specific surface area [6].
