Establish generic elements of sustainable business practices. The tool synthesizes a broad range of generally accepted SD concepts into seven major elements. This provides a comprehensive basis for companies to select the desired scope and focus of their own SD efforts. 

Mass Productivity appears to be a useful metric for focusing attention away from waste towards the use of materials. As such, it is more likely to drive chemical and technology innovations that will lead to more sustainable business practices. 

In addition, some GSK production processes address the second step noted above through the use of microorganisms as a sustainable resource to produce raw materials, enzymes, or advanced intermediates that either make up or make our medicines. Harnessing biological processes to make complex materials and active pharmaceutical ingredients is clearly an extremely desirable goal for the Pharmaceutical Industry, but the promise remains largely unrealized. The third step towards more sustainable business practices will be taken in the future as the business evolves and opportunities become more available and are better understood. 

Our main goal of this book is to provide a framework for companies to adopt sustainable business practices to demonstrate how businesses can translate sustainability strategies into action. Our focus is how to operationalize sustainability, and we seek to be relevant to not only managers in industry, but also to future managers in business and engineering educational programs.

The resultant curve is an unlimited global benefit curve. Green chemistry and engineering is part of this resultant curve. It should become a standard operating practice, as it has been shown that sustainable business practices boost profits. 

The most obvious signs of this embrace of sustainability are the systems, business processes and programs that companies institute and support. For this superstructure to function successfully, however, it must be firmly rooted in core values and principles of business conduct that have been articulated by management and are lived by all employees. We have seen too many examples of corporate failures in the recent past where the systems and processes were in place, but values and ethical business practices were lacking. Values and business conduct are the foundation for sustainability and long-term business success. 

From its organizational values to its business practice statement, RTIO appears to adopt a view of social inclusion as incorporating community consultation in corporate activity from preentry to exit, good corporate-community relations, community self-determination, and promotion of community and regional sustainability. In line with this perspective, the first step undertaken in the project was problem identification in consultation with local communities. This phase of the project is summarized next. 

Chapter 14 explores (1) the different kinds of practices implemented by Finnish corporations with respect to corporate sustainability and how (2) corporate sustainability is applied in their business practices.
