Global benefit

Although O2 is sensed by almost all mammalian cells, it is in the carotid body, strategically placed, that O2 sensing takes place for the global benefit of the rest of the body. Here, in the carotid body, a tiny organ, situated at the brfiircation of the carotid artery close to the heart, it captures Pq in the flow of blood on the way to the brain. With each inspiration (few seconds), alveolar Pq is renewed. The new Pq from the lung circulation is pumped by the heart into the carotid artery and carotid body. This is sensed instantaneously and carried by the chemoreceptor afferents to the brain and then by the efferents to the respiratory and cardiovascular reflex systems. By the next inspiration, the event is repeated from breath to breath, and life is sustained, by the feedback control system. [Pg.289]

In addition, Article 3 of the FCCC specifies that, .. . policies and measures to deal with climate change should be cost-effective so as to ensure global benefits at the lowest possible cost. ... [Pg.20]

The resultant curve is an unlimited global benefit curve. Green chemistry and engineering is part of this resultant curve. It should become a standard operating practice, as it has been shown that sustainable business practices boost profits. [Pg.68]

The business climate of the 1990s is different from the past. Factors such as increased competition, a global marketplace, rapid technical shifts, and greatly compressed product life cycles constantly open new opportunities for plastics in general and reinforced plastics in particular. Reinforced plastics have become widely accepted for particular appHcations because they offer a combination of design, performance, and economic benefits to the user. These materials have had a proven record of success since the 1940s. [Pg.97]

Agriculture consumes by far the most of any use category to which the accessible mnoff worldwide is appHed (Table 6). Postel and co-workers estimate that human uses make up 26% of total terrestrial evapotranspiration and 54% of the mnoff geographically and temporally accessible (9). Increased use of evapotranspiration will confer minimal benefits globally because most of the land suitable for rain-fed agriculture is already in production. New dam constmction could increase accessible mnoff by about 10% over the next 30 years however, population increase during that period is projected to be more than 45%. [Pg.211]

These measures, however, were insufficient for the automotive industry. Hence a global certification scheme has been developed that addresses each of these weaknesses and as a result creates a very robust system that will yield tremendous benefits for the industry (see also Part 1 Chapter 5). [Pg.15]

One of the main benefits from future use of biofuels would be the reduction of greenhouse gases compared to the use of fossil fuels. Carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas that contributes to global warming, is released into the air from combustion. Twenty-four percent of worldwide energy-related carbon emissions in 1997 were from the United States. Carbon... [Pg.163]

Smaller companies tend to have fewer concerns around, for example, system scalability, global WAN performance, and complex systems integration. They are rather more driven by the pure functionality of the ELN that is addressing the specific scientific disciplines of interest. Key drivers in this sector of the market have been medicinal chemistry departments, where the obvious benefits of searching existing reactions by substructure and reaction transformations, the ability to automate stoichiometry calculations, the ability to load spectral information, etc. have made for easy adoption and clear and realizable benefits. [Pg.221]
