Unfortunately, chemical processes can be tailored only to a limited extent, and furthermore, the use of some hazardous substances by society is unavoidable. There is much work to be done. It is certain, however, that an integral component of the global sustainability movement is the need for greater respect for our environment. Sustainability will require a concerted effort by all science and engineering professionals and political bodies, as well as by an informed and responsible public.
