Until 1979> the primary herbicide used by foresters for brush control in the South was 2,4,5-T. This chemical could be applied inexpensively ( 15 -30/acre) at rates of 4 to 6 pounds per acre for site preparation. Most applications were conducted with aircraft. Surveys (1977) of herbicide usage on industrial forest lands in the South showed that of the 1,175,350 acres site prepared for planting, 118,100 acres (10 ) were treated with 2,4,5-T, 48,700 (4 ) were treated with other herbicides, and 909,000 acres (77 ) were treated mechanically (anonymous 1978). While few psychiatrists are willing to admit in public that ECT causes brain damage, a large survey of the APA membership, conducted with anonymity in the 1970s, showed that 41% of the respondents agreed with the statement It is likely that ECT produces slight or subtle brain damage. Only 26% responded that it did not (APA, 1978). 

Another valuable communication tool is seldom used—anonymous employee opinion surveys conducted by the manager, in addition to those of the Human Resources department. Annually, workers are asked to submit to the secretary their answers for three questions. The secretary then combines all responses ... 

These and other problems are real and must be addressed if national survey data on drug use are to have the utility that they are intended to have. Fortunately, over the years the challenge to collect accurate survey information has been an active research area, and methods of representative sampling and data collection to assure confidentiality or anonymity of responses have led to better survey design and procedures. These advances have resulted in data that meet high standards of reliability and accuracy. This is not to say that national survey data provide a literal picture of drug use in a population but that the picture is getting clearer and more detailed as survey research methods continue to improve.

The survey does not specify the company proposing a given salary, so a job hunter cannot compare what one firm offers to what another does. (For the same reason, however. Starting Salaries 1996 protects the anonymity of respondents to the annual survey.)...
