Salaries starting

Fischer and Duisberg also discussed the salaries of chemists working as assistants at universities and those of employees in industry. Duisberg made up a table of the average yearly incomes of chemists at the Farbenfabriken Bayer. Salary level mostly depended on years of service. Salaries started in the first five years at 5,800 Marks and increased after 20 years to 16,000 Marks. The salaries of assistants and assistant professors in Fischer s institute and other institutes of natural science at the university started at about 3,000 Marks and increased to about 10,000 Marks. Only full professors had an income of 11,000 to 18,000 Marks. Fischer s comment on the data was that "I am satisfied that the career of chemists (in industry) is not as bad as often stated." ... 

In the meantime, Du Pont upped its salary offer by 20 percent to 6000 a year and continued to reassure Carothers that he could work on theoretical problems in an industrial setting. Carothers was changing his mind. Finally, on October 31, 1927, Carothers told Du Pont, I have decided to accept your offer if it still holds. He could start work in three months.

Figure 5.8 presents these same data from a different perspective, showing women s salaries as a percentage of men s. There is a definite drop as years of experience increase, and there is a worrisome increase in the gap as the years past B.S. increase. Several factors have been posited to explain this gap—women leaving the workforce for family reasons, and so on. This is also closely correlated with the numbers of degrees granted. The increased disparity didn t start until about the 20-year mark. Note the horizontal line at about 72 percent this is the national average for the United States.

It is also true that professional athletes may spend years and years practicing with farm teams for a fraction of the salary they receive once they make it to the top. But in every career path, we start off with lower wages and must pay our dues and work our way up. Besides, farm team salaries are not always so low.
