Surgery prosthesis implantation

Nerves are rarely damaged during the total joint replacement surgery. However, nerve damage can occur if considerable joint deformity must be corrected in order to implant the prosthesis. With time these nerves sometimes return to normal function. [Pg.188]

The analysis of microporous Teflon-based arterial prostheses, which were retrieved along autopsies or along revision surgeries, confirmed the excellent biostability of these devices insofar as they had been carefully implanted. Few ruptures or tears were observed but had been likely caused either by a bad handling or by fibrosis expansion, the latter being more frequent for non-sheathed devices (Formichi et al. [22,23]). Taking into account the lack of stability of the prosthesis wall, the two major makers made tremendous efforts to improve this situation. W.L. The application of polymeric materials in medicine is a fairly specialized area with a wide range of specific applications and requirements. Although the total volume of polymers used in this application may be small compared to the annual production of polyethylene, for example, the total amount of money spent annually on prosthetic and biomedical devices exceeds 16 billion in the United States alone. These applications include over a million dentures, nearly a half billion dental fillings, about six million contact lenses, over a million replacement joints (hip, knee, finger, etc.), about a half million plastic surgery operations (breast prosthesis, facial reconstruction, etc.), over 25,000 heart valves, and 60,000 pacemaker implantations. In addition, over AO,000 patients are on hemodialysis units (artificial kidney) on a regular basis, and over 90,000 coronary bypass operations (often using synthetic polymers) are performed each year (]J. [Pg.535]

Within a decade of incorporating UHMWPE into TKA, this new form of surgery reached the same level of consistency and success as THA. However, the introduction of UHMWPE influenced the historical development of THA and TKA in different ways. With THA, Chamley had already perfected the design of the low friction arthroplasty, but the introduction of UHMWPE ensured the long-term durability of the prosthesis. With TKA, on the other hand, UHMWPE was accepted from the outset as the material of choice by implant designers, and the design concepts, not the material, were forced to evolve to achieve successful performance in the knee. [Pg.146]

The results for treated blood vessels showed that after 4 weeks, the BASYC -prosthesis was wrapped up with connective tissue, pervaded with small vessels like vasa vasorum. The BASYC -interposition was completely incorporated in the body without any rejection reaction. Results from micronerve surgery (white rat sciatic nerve) showed similar results. From 4 to 26 weeks following the intervention, the bacterial cellulose tube was covered with connective tissue and contained small vessels. No inflammation reaction or capsulation of the implant was observed. The regeneration nerve was improved after 10 weeks, compared to an uncovered anastomosed nerve. [Pg.380]

In the past AAAs were treated by open surgery which involved a large abdominal incision and implantation of a synthetic prosthesis as described in a previous chapter. Today, with the development of the endovascular stent graft, the less invasive EVAR is approach that has several advantages over the open procedure, chief among which is a lower perioperative morbidity and mortality rate (Teufelsbauer, 2002 Biebl, 2005). [Pg.643]
