The nylon-clay nanocomposites were prepared by in situ polymerization in the presence of organically modified, with aminolauric acid, montmorillonite. The reaction between nylon monomer and modified montmorillonite rendered nylon chains end-tethered though aminolauric acid to the silicate surface leading to exfoliated silicates (61). However, not all polymer nanocomposite systems could be produced via in situ polymerization processes because of the chemical sensitivity of polymerization catalysts. Direct melt blending of hydrophilic polymers with montmorillonite in its pristine state or polymers with surfactant-intercalated montmorillonite was found to be possible to deliver polymer intercalated or exfoliated nanocomposites (62,63). [Pg.3143]

Photochemical decomposition in surfactant-intercalated saponite was investigated under visible light irradiation. The rate constant of the decomposition in C3F-saponite was the smallest. Photochemical decomposition of Rose Bengal is caused by the singlet oxygen, which is quenched by water molecules. The high water content around ammonium group shown in Section 15.2.4 was responsible for the decomposition [79]. [Pg.483]

Novel room-temperature-vulcanized silicone mbber-organo-MMT nanocomposites were prepared by a solution intercalation process by Wang et al. [104]. A new strategy was developed by Ma et al. [105] to prepare disorderly exfoliated nanocomposites, in which a soft siloxane surfactant with a weight-average molecular weight of 1900 was adopted to modify the clay. [Pg.44]

Akelah andMoet [62] followed a modified approach to prepare PS-clay intercalated nanocomposites using a solvent to facilitate intercalation. MMT was ion exchanged using a polymerizable surfactant, vinylbenzyltrimethylammonium chloride. Acetonitrile was found to be the most effective solvent, producing a d-spacing of 2.45 mn versus 2.22 and... [Pg.660]

The structural integrity of M2D-C3-0-(E0)ra-CH3 was maintained for all solid media investigated, as confirmed by qualitative analysis of the flow injection analysis (FIA) API-MS spectra (example shown in Fig. 2.8.10a). Intercalation of the surfactant solution between the clay layers was considered as the likely cause of the reduced recovery on montmorillonite (74%), according to experimental observations and... [Pg.660]

The results indicate that persistence of organosilicone surfactants in the parent molecule form will be limited on typical soil media and in aqueous environments. Reduced recovery was considered to be a result of abiotic degradation and/or strong sorption processes. Losses were most significant on solid media exhibiting extreme pH values and were also enhanced in the presence of clay substrates. Studies on clays indicated that pH, potential for intercalation and surface charges are important factors in the removal process. [Pg.678]
