Metal Surface Composition To determine which metal bound to surfaces of road dust, soil dust was collected that contained larger particles (400 to 3000 nm diameter in air) and that compared closely to amorphous silica dust (6, 7). This dust was thought to be composed of both particles ground from the Earth s emst and particles generated by transportation vehicles that drive on the roads from which road dust was collected. Dust was collected near a road in four fractions. <56 nm, <100nm, both ultrafine (nano) particle aerosols, a fraction <2500 nm (a fine aerosol), and one < 10,000 nm (a coarse aerosol). Different elements were enriched on the surface of different-sized particles (6, 7). [Pg.733]

During the oxidation process long-life radicals are formed, which are mesomerically stabilized. These radicals can induce the oxidation of bitumen binder in the road surface or roofing felt, even at low temperatures under the influence of UV radiation. Moreover temperatures up to 60 °C or 80 °C may be reached at the surfaces of roads or roofing felts as a result of the IR radiation in sunlight. However, the energetic UV rays can only penetrate the surface for a few micrometers due to the dark color of the bitumen. [Pg.296]

In the first reconstruction [27] of road slabs contaminated with CL, silicon iron anodes were embedded in a layer of coke breeze as shown in Fig. 19-4a or the current connection was achieved with noble metal wires in a conducting mineral bedding material. Slots were ground into the concrete surface for this purpose at spacings of about 0.3 m (see Fig. 19-4b). This system is not suitable for vertical structures. [Pg.434]

The question of the influence of the road surface on tire wear cannot be answered unequivocally because of the large number of different compositions, state of use, and weather influences on their abrasive power. Road surfaces are also not durable enough for laboratory use. Hence, reliance has to be placed on the correlation between laboratory results on a laboratory abrasive surface and road test experience. Alumina of different grain size (but primarily 60) has proved to be the most useful. Even its sharpness changes with time of use and disks are limited in their useful life. [Pg.759]
