Decontamination surfaces

Chemicals such as chlorine are often used to clean and decontaminate food products and food processing surfaces. The increased effectiveness of ultrasound in combination with chlorine in decontaminating broiler breast skin inoculated -with Salmonella has been investigated [46]. The mechanism suggested involved the release of Salmonella cells from the skin by sonication together with the improved penetration of chlorine into the cells through the action of ultrasound (see above).

Insects are considered to be another potential vector for faecal material to produce in production areas (Geldreich et al., 1964). Pollinating insects might inoculate flowers with pathogens opening the pathway for fruits to internalize pathogens and eliminating their accessibility to surface decontamination (De Roever, 1999).

Widespread research has to be focused on the potential of animal product surface decontamination, which is an additional feature of processing in concentrated aqueous solutions.

Pentagone is an aqueous-based surface decontamination product developed for the cleanup of pentachlorophenols, creosote, petroleum hydrocarbons, chlorinated hydrocarbons, polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons, and selected pesticide and herbicide spills. It can be used on concrete, asphalt, or metal and is capable of being applied as a foam, allowing treatment of overhead, vertical, and horizontal surfaces. It has been commercially available since 1993 and has been used in multiple applications. 

Photocatalytic bactericidal activity experiments were performed using E. coli with untreated and TiO -coated fabric and aluminum foil (Fig. 1.6) and with or without UV-A irradiation. Photocatalytic bactericidal properties of TiO -coated fabric and foil were observed after 30 min. The most distinctive difference between coated and UV-irradiated materials was observed initially. This is a clear demonstration of the photocatalytic ability of TiO and accelerated surface decontamination. We observed complete bacteria killing only on aluminum foil coated with TiO, and partial killing on the coated fabric. These results suggest that TiO coated materials have bactericidal properties. 

Phenolic disinfectants are used for hard surface decontamination in hospitals and laboratories, eg, floors, beds, and counter or bench tops. They are not recommended for use in nurseries and especially in bassinets, where their use has been associated with hyperbilirubinemia. Use of hexachlorophene as a skin disinfectant has caused cerebral edema and convulsions in premature infants and occasionally in adults. 

For the pharmaceutical and food industries, surface finish is very important to enable effective cleaning and sterilization or sanitization. Equipment should be specified with a polished internal finish, possibly with electropolishing for critical applications, and designed with a minimum of crevices or dead spaces where dirt can collect. Welds must be finished to the same standard as the plates and ground flush with the internal surface and must be pinhole and crevice free. External surface finish may also be important for visual reasons and to enable cleaning down for surface decontamination in clean room locations.

Surface decontamination may be accomplished using hypochlorite bleach slurries, dilute alkalis, or DS2 decontaminating solution. Steam and ammonia may be used for the decontamination of confined spaces. 

A. Operational rations are safe when surface decontamination is performed before breaking the package. The package should be thoroughly washed with water to remove the contamination.

The methods available for volume reduction are different for liquid and solid waste. For liquid waste evaporation, ion exchange, and flocculation are used for solid waste incineration, baling and surface decontamination are the most common processes. 

Personnel entering a contained area where organisms had not been handled in open circuit operations in the previous twelve hours to check on cultures in sealed, surface decontaminated flasks would not be regarded as being at risk of contamination, unless the organism involved was an exotic. 

Separate incubators should be used for infected and non infected containers and also generally for different organisms or cells. Incubators containing more that one organism or cell type will only be acceptable if adequate steps are taken to seal, surface decontaminate and segregate the containers. Culture vessels, etc. should be individually labelled. The cleaning and disinfection of the items can be particularly difficult and should receive special attention.
