Reducing variable

The equation of state detemiined by Z N, V, T ) is not known in the sense that it cannot be written down as a simple expression. However, the critical parameters depend on e and a, and a test of the law of corresponding states is to use the reduced variables T, and as the scaled variables in the equation of state. Figure A2.3.5 bl illustrates this for the liquid-gas coexistence curves of several substances. As first shown by Guggenlieim [19], the curvature near the critical pomt is consistent with a critical exponent (3 closer to 1/3 rather than the 1/2 predicted by van der Waals equation. This provides additional evidence that the law of corresponding states obeyed is not the fomi associated with van der Waals equation. Unlike the pressure where p = 0 has physical meaning, the zero of free energy is arbitrary, so, instead of the ideal gas volume, we can use as a reference the molar volume of the real fluid at its critical point. Flalf a century later Van Konynenburg and Scott (1970, 1980) [3] used the van der Waals equation to derive detailed phase diagrams for two-component systems with various parameters. Object in this section is to review how rheological knowledge combined with laboratory data can be used to predict stresses developed in plastics undergoing strains at different rates and at different temperatures. The procedure of using laboratory experimental data for the prediction of mechanical behavior under a prescribed use condition involves two principles that are familiar to rheologists one is Boltzmann s superposition principle which enables one to utilize basic experimental data such as a stress relaxation modulus in predicting stresses under any strain history the other is the principle of reduced variables which by a temperature-log time shift allows the time scale of such a prediction to be extended substantially beyond the limits of the time scale of the original experiment.

It is apparent that for these nonpolar molecules the correlation is satisfactory. In this case, a characteristic of the liquid state (the boiling point) is correlated with a parameter from an equation that was developed to explain the behavior of gases. The liquid and gaseous states are referred to as fluids, and van der Waals equation can be considered as an equation that applies to fluids as well as to gases through the use of the reduced variables (see references at the end of this chapter). Table 6.4 gives values for the van der Waals a parameter for molecules most of which are nonpolar.
