Product specifications are written descriptions or briefs that state the properties of materials, procedures, dimensions and performance attributes to provide control of the product during production. Product specifications may be based on a standard or a series of standards related to the product. Standards specify the performance requirements of a product and may include a set of characteristics or procedures that provides a basis for resource and production decision. Product specifications may be required on contractual agreements between buyer and supplier. In a manufacturing supply chain conscientious attention to specifications can lead to consistency in the quality of a product (Clock and Kunz, 2005). [Pg.111]

The purpose of validation is to demonstrate the capability of the water treatment and air handling system to continuously supply the required quantity of water and air with the specified quality attributes. Documented means to provide documented evidence. Validation provides the system owner with the means of assessing when a water treatment and/or air handling system is operating outside established control parameter limits and provides a means for bringing the system back into a state of control. The partial oxidation of cinnamyl alcohol (Ph-CH—CH-CH2OH) to cinnamalde-hyde was conducted in the presence of a surfactant (sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate) because reactant and product were insoluble in water [45,50]. Oxidation on Bi-Pt/AljOj catalysts was performed at basic pH obtained by addition of Li2C03, and by controlling the air supply to avoid over-oxidation of the metal. The maximum selectivity for cinnamaldehyde, 98.5 % at 95.5 % conversion, was obtained for a Bi/Pts ratio of 0.5. The high selectivity for cinnamyl aldehyde was attributed to the negligible hydration of the aldehyde because of the conjugation of C—O, C=C, and aromatic nucleus (see Section 9.2.2.1). Under similar conditions the selectivity for oxidation of 1-dodecanol [50] to dodecanal was poor. [Pg.499]

Iron availability is low in rice and maize-based phytate-rich Third World diets, and blood losses due to hook-worm infections are frequent in these countries. Iron deficiency is the most widespread micronutrient deficiency besides vitamin A and iodide. The prevalence of iron deficiency may be as high as 60% in Third World pre-school children, and almost half of these children (26%) show iron-deficiency anemia (Romero-Abal et al. 1995). However, about half of the even higher prevalence for anemia of up to 70% in African women and children (Quar-shie and Amoaful 1998) seems attributable to inflammation and parasitic infections (Asobayire et al. 2001) and other micronutrient deficiencies, rather than to iron deficiency (Allen et al. 2000). Hypochromic microcytic iron-deficiency anemia reduces physical work capacity, and both show a close correlation (Dallman 1982). As the brain is luxuriously perfused with blood, impairment of intellectual performance in anemia is a very variable symptom. Anemia at an age of 12-18 months seems to compromise the infant s intellectual development. To what extent such deficits in intelligence can be compensated during later development at adequate iron supply levels has been discussed, somewhat controversially, by Walter (1993) and Pollitt (2001). [Pg.819]
