Alzheimer s Disease This disease is due to the accumulation of j8-amyloid protein in the brain. The protein is believed to trigger brain degeneration through cell death of the neurons. Alzheimer s disease is characterized by loss of memory and intellectual performance, and slowness in thought. In the United States, a class of drugs called cholinesterase inhibitors is approved to treat Alzheimer s disease. Both Europe and the United States have approved a drug called memantine for treatment of Alzheimer s disease. 

The most frequent adverse reactions are those that are an extension of the therapeutic effects, i.e. extended CNS depression manifesting itself as distortions in mood and impaired judgment and fine motor skills as well as intellectual performance as long as a day after usage.

Stress degrades the performance of tasks involving creative thought. If a human being is to contribute effectively to a partnership with a computer, he or she should be allowed to function without handicaps. Therefore the causes of stress should be identified and, as far as possible, removed. Effective partnership with a supercomputer will require even higher levels of intellectual performance from the human. Therefore it will more-imperatively require the reduction of stress. 

Given the apparent effects of cocaine on Halstead s writing style, it is frightening to imagine how his surgery was going So the notion that cocaine enhances intellectual performance appears to be a myth. 

Stimulant drugs enhance learning and intellectual performance. 

Studies which I made on myself and a group of normal subjects show that with ordinary therapeutic doses there is little or no deleterious effect on the intellectual performance.

Iron availability is low in rice and maize-based phytate-rich Third World diets, and blood losses due to hook-worm infections are frequent in these countries. Iron deficiency is the most widespread micronutrient deficiency besides vitamin A and iodide. The prevalence of iron deficiency may be as high as 60% in Third World pre-school children, and almost half of these children (26%) show iron-deficiency anemia (Romero-Abal et al. 1995). However, about half of the even higher prevalence for anemia of up to 70% in African women and children (Quar-shie and Amoaful 1998) seems attributable to inflammation and parasitic infections (Asobayire et al. 2001) and other micronutrient deficiencies, rather than to iron deficiency (Allen et al. 2000). Hypochromic microcytic iron-deficiency anemia reduces physical work capacity, and both show a close correlation (Dallman 1982). As the brain is luxuriously perfused with blood, impairment of intellectual performance in anemia is a very variable symptom. Anemia at an age of 12-18 months seems to compromise the infant s intellectual development. To what extent such deficits in intelligence can be compensated during later development at adequate iron supply levels has been discussed, somewhat controversially, by Walter (1993) and Pollitt (2001). 

The indicator for this condition is neonatal serum thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH). A prevalence of 1-10% of elevated TSH has been reported from various endemic diseases (Kochupillai et ai, 1986). There is evidence from India of an epidemiological correlation, with subsequent intellectual performance from India (Kochupillai et ai, 1986) and elsewhere (Delange, 1994).
