Different types of industries require different characteristics to be taken into account, because in model-based planning the real decision situation must be represented adequately, as the solution will otherwise not provide any benefit. Along the lines of Meyr and Stadtler [3], the characteristics of different supply chains can be classified into functional attributes (procurement type, production type, distribution type, and sales type) and structural attributes (topography of a supply chain, integration, and coordination).

Barriers to Using the Internet in Supply Chain Integration... 

It is critical that firms be able to plan and schedule production in their own firms accurately for supply chain integration to work. The master production schedule is the outcome of all of the planning. It is the contract between one firm and its marketing department and hence the remainder of the supply chain. If one member of the supply chain cannot create a valid master production scheule and adhere to the schedule, then there is a large amount of variance within the chain and all remaining members of the supply chain must include a large amount of either spare capacity or lead time to ensure that they deliver when they agreed to. 

An APS can facilitate supply chain integration. It can track supplier capabilities and constraints and incorporate these into decisions. It can also track the capabilities of the transportation providers to ensure that distribution and delivery are not compromised. 

The major barrier to increased supply chain integration is the mind set of the managers of the different firms involved. With or without an Internet, most managers view their firm as being an independent system. They do not have a systematic view of the supply chain. Given this attitude, it is difficult for a firm to develop the openness necessary to share information freely over an extranet.

Organizational interdependencies identification results in the recognition of interdependencies within organizations. Inter-organizational interdependencies identification, in advance, helps companies to recognize the links and relationships between organizations.
