Critical loads data are usually presented as maps showing the sensitivity of receptors present at each location or as a percentile in the fi quency distribution of the receptors present within a particular grid square. Organic sulphur- and nitrogen-compounds in motor fuels are a source for acid rain and harmful to the environment. Moreover, they are poisonous to the auto exhaust catalysts. To meet new developments in EU regulations on the S-concentration, a commonly applied one-step hydrodesulfurization (HDS), using conventional catalysts, e.g. C0-M0/7-AI2O3, is insufficient. A second HDS step, viz. a deep HDS step, can be more economical to reduce the S-content to the currently allowed European level of 350 ppm. This level will be reduced further to 50 ppm in 2005 [1]. In the first HDS step, often the heavy organic sulfur-containing polyaromatics survived, such as dibenzothiophene (DBT) and (4-, and/or 6-) alkylated DBTs [2,3]. They are the most refractory. In crude oils, there are also aromatic N-compounds, which suppress the performance of the HDS catalysts. Hence, a model feed for representative HDS-activity measurements should contain characteristic S- and N- compounds for practical relevance. [Pg.1019]

The acidifying effect of the vegetation is therefore limited to a regulation of the wash-out of the basic components formed by vitrification of the minerals. In addition to this, humus components (fulvic acid), and mineralization of reduced sulphur and nitrogen compounds may to some extent contribute to the acidity and the anion concentration in the drainage water. But this seems to be of limited significance for the "regional acidification problem". [Pg.17]

The energy consumption in our country is tilted heavily towards the middle distillate (kerosene/ATF and diesel oil). The demand of diesel oil alone is more than 37% [1]. The recoverable reserve of petroleum crude in India is 763 MMT against 193 billion tons of coal [2]. On the other hand, Fischer-Tropsch Synthesis (FTS) produces superior quality diesel oil since the feedstock does not contain sulphur and nitrogen compounds or aromatics. The only drawback is that the process produces a wide spectrum of products from C1-C340+ hydrocarbons [3]. These drawbacks have been in part overcome by the discovery, in recent years, of new and effective catalysts which will be the subject of this review. Fentonlike reactions and the oxidation of sulphur and nitrogen compounds will not be considered. Emphasis will be put on selective catalysts, discovered over the last decade, and especially on phase transfer [9] and redox zeolite catalysts [10-11]. [Pg.22]

TS-1 is an efficient and selective catalyst for the oxidation of various organic molecules with H O sulphur and nitrogen compounds, alcohols, olefins, aromatic and aliphatic C-H bonds [11, 92-93]. Selectivity is the result of the electrophilic properties of active oxidant species and of the shape selectivity. The latter arises from diffusion of reagents and products and from steric constraints in the transition state (restricted transition state shape selectivity). Molecules having a cross section larger than about 0.6 nm cannot difhise to TS-1 active sites and are not oxidised. This restricts TS-1 catalysis to almost linear molecules and mononuclear aromatic compounds, bearing small or no substituents. On the other hand, small molecules can be selectively oxidised in the presence of bulkier ones. [Pg.27]
