Increases in the UTS of the polypropylene fabric by impregnation with sulfur materials ranged from 24 to 87% the highest increases were obtained with dicyclopentadiene-modified sulfur materials. Merely heat-... [Pg.34]

It has been known for many years that sulfur can modify the properties of asphalts (38). With the recent dramatic increases in oil prices and hence the price of asphalt, the use of sulfur in flexible paving materials is being examined with renewed interest (39-45), particularly in areas where sulfur is available and is less expensive than asphalt. In addition to the possible economic benefits, if asphalt can be partially or completely replaced by sulfur in flexible pavement concretes, other benefits in terms of improved material properties might also accrue. [Pg.113]

There are two different chemical types of secondary AOs. Both have the common properties of low cost relative to primary and the ability to be oxidized to colorless materials before the quinones can form from primary AOs. Organic phosphite and organic sulfur compounds modified to fit the needs of specific polymers are the chemicals that are used. [Pg.492]

Clearly, it is important that there be a large contact angle at the solid particle-solution-air interface. Some minerals, such as graphite and sulfur, are naturally hydrophobic, but even with these it has been advantageous to add materials to the system that will adsorb to give a hydrophobic film on the solid surface. (Effects can be complicated—sulfur notability oscillates with the number of preadsoibed monolayers of hydrocarbons such as n-heptane [76].) The use of surface modifiers or collectors is, of course, essential in the case of naturally hydrophilic minerals such as silica. [Pg.476]

Sulfur Polymer Cement. SPC has been proven effective in reducing leach rates of reactive heavy metals to the extent that some wastes can be managed solely as low level waste (LLW). When SPC is combined with mercury and lead oxides (both toxic metals), it interacts chemically to form mercury sulfide, HgS, and lead sulfide, PbS, both of which are insoluble in water. A dried sulfur residue from petroleum refining that contained 600-ppm vanadium (a carcinogen) was chemically modified using dicyclopentadiene and oligomer of cyclopentadiene and used to make SC (58). This material was examined by the California Department of Health Services (Cal EPA) and the leachable level of vanadium had been reduced to 8.3 ppm, well below the soluble threshold limit concentration of 24 ppm (59). [Pg.126]

The level of technical service support provided for a given product generally tracks in large part where the suppHer considers thek product to be located within the spectmm of commodity to specialty chemicals. Technical service support levels for pure chemicals usually provided in large quantities for specific synthetic or processing needs, eg, ammonia (qv), sulfuric acid (see SuLFURic ACID AND SULFURTRIOXIDe), formaldehyde (qv), oxygen (qv), and so forth, are considerably less than for more complex materials or blends of materials provided for multistep downstream processes. Examples of the latter are many polymers, colorants, flocculants, impact modifiers, associative thickeners, etc. For the former materials, providing specifications of purity and physical properties often comprises the full extent of technical service requked or expected by customers. These materials are termed undifferentiated chemicals (9),... [Pg.377]

St. Joe Minerals Corporation uses a fluid-bed roaster to finish the roasting at 950°C of material that has been deleaded in a modified multiple-hearth furnace operated with insufficient oxidation (34). First, sulfur is reduced from 31 to 22% and lead from 0.5 to 0.013%. Somewhat aggregated, the product is hammer-milled before final roasting. Half of the calcined product is bed overflow and special hot cyclones before the boiler remove the other half total sulfur is ca 1.5%. Boiler and precipitator dusts are higher in sulfur, lead, etc, and are separated. [Pg.400]

A variety of materials has been proposed to modify the properties of asphaltic binders to enhance the properties of the mix (112), including fillers and fibers to reinforce the asphalt—aggregate mixture (114), sulfur to strengthen or harden the binder (115,116), polymers (98,117—121), mbber (122), epoxy—resin composites (123), antistripping agents (124), metal complexes (125,126), and lime (127,128). AH of these additives serve to improve the properties of the binder and, ultimately, the properties of the asphalt—aggregate mix. [Pg.373]

Neoprene Type TW was shown to have low oral toxicity in rats. The LD q was found to be in excess of 20,000 mg/kg. Human patch tests with Types GN, W, WRT, and WHV showed no skin reactions (169). The FDA status of Du Pont Neoprene polymers is described (172). Although polychloroprene itself has not been shown to have potential health problems, it should be understood that many mbber chemicals that may be used with CR can be dangerous if not handled properly. This is particularly tme of ethylenethiourea curatives and, perhaps, secondary amine precursors often contained in sulfur modified polychloroprene types. Material safety data sheets should be consulted for specific information on products to be handled. [Pg.549]

In summary, the fragmentary evidence at hand suggests that sulfur was the primordial iron complexing material and that this ligand system was selectively modified by stepwise transition to a mixed sulfur-nitrogen and sulfur-oxygen and, finally, to an all-oxygen type of coordination. [Pg.169]
