An element is a substance that cannot be broken down into simpler substances by ordinary chemical means. A chemical compound is a substance made up of two or more elements that have been chemically bonded together. Scientists believe that solid sulfur compounds do not exist on Venus like they do on Earth because, at about 900° Fahrenheit (480° Celsius), the surface temperature on Venus is too hot for them to form in the first place. This temperature is well above the melting point of sulfur (235°F [ 113°C]). One final consideration when storing solid sulfur is the almost inevitable presence of sulfuric acid. Sulfur can become naturally contaminated with sulfuric acid through the presence of thiobacilli thiooxidans3 or continuous exposure to direct sunlight.4 Recent research has demonstrated the short-term effectiveness of certain bactericides in delaying bacterial colonization. Nevertheless, discrete pockets of weak (highly corrosive) sulfuric acid should always be presumed to exist within a sulfur storage pile. Hydrochloric acid, which may also be present when solid sulfur has been transported by vessel,5 must be neutralized to avoid potentially disastrous corrosion of downstream equipment. [Pg.1159]

Acid-Initiated Polymerization. Acid-initiated polymerization of cy-closiloxanes has not received nearly as much attention in the published literature until recently. Consequently, the uncertainty and controversy over the mechanism is greater than that for base-initiated polymerizations. A recent paper by Sigwalt (41) reviews the more current activity on this subject. This focused primarily on initiation with trifluoromethanesulfonic acid in polymerizations of D3 and D4. Other studies on the chemistry and spectroscopy of pure SO2 cast further light on the question of the possible existence of an isomer of the form SOO. Norrish and Oldershaw flash-photolyzed sulfur dioxide and found that as the SO2 spectrum disappeared, a continuous absorption in the far uv appeared and faded slowly as the SO2 reappeared. There was little net chemical change as a result of the flash. They agreed that the intermediate spectrum might be due to an isomer of sulfur dioxide. Nesbitt et al. (1995) conducted a detailed study of the oxidation of arsenopyrite in oxygenated solutions. Arsenic and sulfur were observed to exist in multiple oxidation states near the pristine surface. After reaction with air-saturated distilled water, Fe(III) oxyhydroxides formed the dominant iron surface species, and As(V), As(III), and As(I) were as abundant as As(—I) surface species. An appreciable amount of sulfate was observed on the mineral surface. Arsenic was more readily oxidized than sulfur, and similar rates of the oxidation of As(—I) and Fe(II)" surface species were observed. Nesbitt et al. (1995) concluded that continued dilfusion of arsenic to the surface under these conditions can produce large amounts of As " " and As, promoting rapid selective leaching of arsenites and arsenates. [Pg.4701]

Recently, several new manmade superheavy elements have been discovered. These include elements 110 and 111, both of which were made in late 1994 by an international team of scientists. These scientists performed this research at GSI, a research center for heavy ion research in Darmstadt, Germany. Element 110 was made by colliding nickel atoms with an isotope of lead. Researchers in Russia have plans to make a different isotope of element 110 by colliding sulfur atoms with plutonium atoms. Elements 116 and 118 were recently discovered at a Berkeley laboratory. Other superheavy elements which have been predicted to exist have yet to be made in the laboratory, although research continues into the creation of these elements. [Pg.806]
