It is also possible that bacterial decomposition of sulfur containing organic compounds may account for some DMS in natural waters (31-36). Conversely, bacteria may also utilize DMS and therefore act as a sink (37-39). The contribution of bacterial processes to the DMS/DMSP cycle in open ocean environments has not been addressed and is as yet not understood. However, studies to better understand the biogeochemistry of DMS can not exclude bacterial processes (e.g. 4041). 

This paper summarizes our understanding of the geochemistry of sulfur in coal in the following areas 1) abundance of sulfur in coals of major coal basins in the U.S., 2) distribution of sulfur in coal lithotypes and macerals, 3) characteristics and geochemical significance of sulfur-containing organic compounds,... 

Studies of sulfur-containing organic compounds in coal provide information on the origin of organic sulfur and the transformation of sulfur compounds during coal maturation. The distribution and types of organic sulfur compounds in coal have profound implications for desulfurization processes. 

In summary, considerable progress has been made in recent years in the characterization of sulfur-containing organic compounds in coal. Much of this progress is attributed to the development of GC-MS. However, systematic study of many coal samples from different seams is needed to establish a firm relationship between the nature of organosulfur compounds and either coal rank or depositional environment. 

Hydrogenolysis of carbon-sulfur bonds is a widely utilized reaction for removing sulfur from sulfur-containing organic compounds, and is known as desulfurization or hydrodesulfurization. Bougault et al. used Raney Ni for the first time for the desulfurization of aliphatic thioalcohols and disulfides in neutral and alkaline solution.126 Since then the reaction has been widely applied, for example, for organic syntheses, purification of solvents and substrates, structural studies, and determination of sulfur contents.127...

Many sulfur-containing organic compounds can be isolated from natural sources such as crude oil, petroleum, gas condensates, and coals <2004MI1>. By chromatographic methods <1999MI58> various polycyclic aromatic sulfur heterocycles (PASHs) (1-7) have been identified from standard samples of coal tar, petroleum crude oil and decant oil.

Elemental sulfur is mined along the U.S. Gulf Coast by the Frasch process (Figure 24-2). Most of it is used in the production of sulfuric acid, H2SO4, the most important of all industrial chemicals. Sulfur is used in the vulcanization of rubber and in the synthesis of many important sulfur-containing organic compounds. 

To hydrogenate substrates that contain sulfur impurities or in synthesis of sulfur-containing organic compounds, sulfide catalysts that are not poisoned by sulfur are recommended.
