Detection of halogens. Very few organic compounds contain halogen atoms which form halide ions in aqueous solutions and so can be detected by the addition of silver ion. It is necessary, therefore, to convert the organic halogen to a metallic halide by fusion with metallic sodium or calcium oxide. By such decomposition nitrogen and sulfur, if present, form ions which can be detected by the usual methods of qualitative inorganic analysis. 

Today, benzene and other aromatic and aliphatic hydrocarbons are obtained from fossil fuels, which formed over millions of years from the remains of living things. The main source of these compounds is petroleum, a complex mixture of alkanes, some aromatic hydrocarbons, and organic compounds containing sulfur or nitrogen atoms. 

A large number of organic snlfnr compounds contain sulfur atoms in varions structural features. Most, but not all classes of these compounds may be paralleled as sulfur analogues of various oxygenated organics. These include thiols or thiophenols, thioethers, disulfides, thioureas, thioamides, and so on, as shown below. 

Modem commercial detergents are mixtures. Their most important component is a surfactant, or surface-active agent, which takes the place of the soap. Surfactant molecules are organic compounds with a structure and action similar to those of soap. A difference is that they typically contain sulfur atoms in their polar groups (4).
