A huge number of transition metal-sulfur clusters have been synthesized,36 most of which have been obtained based on the self-assembly methods. On the other hand, to construct the cluster cores with the desired metal-sulfur compositions and connecting schemes, rational pathways leading to the high-yield syntheses of tailored metal-sulfur clusters have recently been explored. Fragment condensations have been demonstrated to be the powerful methods to obtain such clusters numerously,37 some examples of which are shown below. 

The equations for the isotope pairs 2H/1H, 13C/12C, and 34S/32S parallel the relations for 180/160, except that the reference species for carbon and sulfur are CO2 and H2S, rather than solvent water. Carbon and sulfur compositions are many times reported with respect to the PDB (Pee Dee belemnite) and CDT (Canyon Diablo troilite) standards, instead of SMOW. It makes little difference which standard we choose in applying these equations, however, as long as we carry a single standard for each element through the calculation. 

Giardia intestinalis contains PFOR and has been shown to produce hydrogen (Lloyd et al. 2002) but has not been found to contain hydrogeno-somes. Its iron-sulfur composition appears to be quite distinct from those of the trichomonads. EPR showed both soluble and membrane-bound iron-sulfur proteins of the [4Fe-4S] type (ElUs et al. 1993). 

The famous Chinese firecracker uses a mixture of potassium chlorate, sulfur, and aluminum. The chlorate combined with sulfur makes this mixture doubly dangerous for the manufacturer. The ignition temperature of the potassium chlorate/sulfur system is less than 200°C The presence of aluminum - an excellent fuel - guarantees that the pyrotechnic reaction will rapidly propagate once it begins. Safety data from China is unavailable, but one has to wonder how many accidents occur annually from the preparation of this firecracker composition. The preparation of potassium chlorate/sulfur compositions was banned in Great Britain in 1894 because of the numerous accidents associated with this mixture ...

Results. AES analysis of impact fracture surfaces on nickel showed considerable spread in sulfur composition at grain boundaries as shown in Fig. 2. The composition varied from approximately 0.04 to 0.20 monolayers on the sample heated to 1100°C for one hour and 0.15 to 0.25 monolayers on a sample that had received additional heating at 600°C for 240 hours. The additional heat treatment shifted the average grain boundary composition by nearly 0.1 monolayer of coverage. 

In this paper we review three types of field studies where the method is used to determine very different aspects of sulfur chemistry in the marine environment. These studies include i) the measurement of the intracellular thiol composition of marine phytoplankton in response to light ii) the reduced sulfur composition of anaerobic sediments and iii) the metabolism of potentially toxic hydrogen sulfide by sediment dwelling bivalve molluscs housing endosymbiotic sulfur oxidizing bacteria. 

The comparison of the PTP and PTO sulfur profiles of coal samples having low or high sulfur contents and ranging from peat to anthracite showed that the technique provides a plain fingerprint of the change of sulfur composition.
