Isoprene [78-79-5] (2-methyl-1,3-butadiene) is a colorless, volatile Hquid that is soluble in most hydrocarbons but is practically insoluble in water. Isoprene forms binary azeotropes with water, methanol, methylamine, acetonitrile, methyl formate, bromoethane, ethyl alcohol, methyl sulfide, acetone, propylene oxide, ethyl formate, isopropyl nitrate, methyla1 (dimethoxymethane), ethyl ether, and / -pentane. Ternary azeotropes form with water—acetone, water—acetonitrile, and methyl formate—ethyl bromide (8). Typical properties of isoprene are Hsted in Table 1. [Pg.462]

Low-temperature solvents are not readily available for many refractory compounds and semiconductors of interest. Molten salt electrolysis is utilized in many instances, as for the synthesis and deposition of elemental materials such as Al, Si, and also a wide variety of binary and ternary compounds such as borides, carbides, silicides, phosphides, arsenides, and sulfides, and the semiconductors SiC, GaAs, and GaP and InP [16], A few available reports regarding the metal chalcogenides examined in this chapter will be addressed in the respective sections. Let us note here that halide fluxes provide a good reaction medium for the crystal growth of refractory compounds. A wide spectrum of alkali and alkaline earth halides provides... [Pg.83]

Within the scope of applications in electronics, electrooptics, and photovoltaics, several metal sulfides and selenides, mostly binaries such as CdS, CdSe, Bi2S3, Bi2Sc3, PbS, PbSe, Ag2S, TlSe, M0S2, ZnSe, ZnS, and SnS2, but also the ternaries... [Pg.132]

Electrochemical preparation studies on low-dimensional structures of ternary or higher order compounds have appeared in the last few years. For example, whiskers of the quasi-ID copper(I) sulfide series KCuv-jcSa (0 < x < 0.34) were grown by employing electrochemical methods via anodic dissolution of copper electrodes, at 110 C in ethylenediamine solution of polysulfide K2Sn (n = 5, 6) electrolytes and, in some cases, CuCl [165]. [Pg.195]

There has been a great deal of work reported in the literature on the analysis of copper(II) in various systems using a pressed pellet of CuS-Ag2S [117], It has been shown that a ternary sulfide called jalpaite (i.e., Ag1.5Cuo.5S) leads to desirable electrochemical and electroanalytical properties for the detection of Cu(II) in natural waters [118]. [Pg.337]

R. E. McCarley No, we have done very little work along this line, although I think important results will be obtained from studies of mixed 0, S phases. So far we have found no direct structural analogies between the reduced ternary molybdenum oxide phases and the various ternary sulfide or selenide phases of the Chevrel type. [Pg.280]

Isolated octahedral M6(p3-Q)82+ (Q=S, Se) clusters are found in a big family of Tc and Re ternary sulfides and selenides of general formula AxM6Qn+ ) where A is an alkali, Tl+, Cu+ (x=4) alkaline earth, Eu2+ or Pb2+ (x=2) ion, and y = 0, 1 or 2. These phases were discovered and thoroughly studied by Prof. W. Bronger s group. The cluster units contain regular M6 octahedra with M-M bond lengths of 2.60-2.65 A for Tc and... [Pg.507]

Many hydrogen compounds are acids. Acids require a different system of nomenclature than other compounds. There are two types of acids binary acids and ternary acids. All acids include the word acid in their name. Binary acids contain only two elements one of which is hydrogen and the other a nonmetal. When naming binary acids, the prefix hydro- appears before the root name of the nonmetal, and there will be an -ic suffix. As an acid, H2S would be hydrosulfuric acid. We used H2S to illustrate the fact that there can be two possible names, hydrogen sulfide or hydrosulfuric acid. If your instructor does not specify which name to use, either is correct. Technically, the name hydrosulfuric acid only applies to aqueous solutions of H2S, H2S(aq). [Pg.26]

The API Subcommittee for Technical Data is sponsoring phase equilibria work by Grant Wilson (Wilco Co.) on water non-hydrocarbon/ hydrocarbon systems. The first system will be n-octane, ethylbenzene, and ethyl cyclohexane as binaries with water and as ternaries with hydrogen sulfide as the third component. [Pg.322]

Ternary semiconductors of the I-III-VI groups (I = Cu, Ag III = Al, Ga, In VI = S, Se, Te) with a chalcopyrite structure have attracted attention as new functional materials for solar hydrogen production [164-167]. With the aim of capturing a larger fraction of solar light, solid solutions of two or more sulfides were prepared. A... [Pg.458]
