Succession contingency plans

Hopefully the risk management activities implemented will prove sufficient. Some risks may still threaten success despite risk management activities, so the strategy should be to continually keep risks under review and revise activities as necessary to deal with residual and emergent risks. It may prove necessary to invoke contingency plans or even move into crisis management mode if the risks appear to be leading the project to failure. 

The success of any response operation, contingency plans, and organizational structure depends primarily on the level of commitment of both the response personnel and the response organization itself. The training, experience, and capabilities of the response personnel in their respective functions, and their ability to work as a team are also crucial to the success of the response operation. 

In the final session of therapy a relapse prevention exercise was introduced (see Chapter 3). This aimed to ensure that the gains made in therapy by Trevor were consolidated. He was asked to consider what gains he felt had been made in therapy, what had changed as a result of therapy, what he had learned in therapy and how he would continue to practise it in his everyday life. A self-help plan was devised in which he was asked to consider how he might deal with set-backs, what the likely high-risk situations for relapse might be and what contingency plans he would have in place to deal with such a lapse. At the final therapy session the pre and post measures were compared to identify the success of the outcome of the interventions employed. 

At best, the model is an abstraction of real-world situations. Consequently, it cannot capture reality without running it more than one time (Dyer and Mulvey 1983 Min 1989). Thus, the model should enable Beta s management team to evaluate what-if scenarios associated with shifts in Beta s management philosophy (e.g., a shift from cost minimization to quick-response services) and competitive positions (e.g., a shift from domestic to global operations). In other words, the model s successful implementation depends on its flexibility for contingency planning. In many cases, major pollution incidents can be prevented if appropriate pollution prevention measures are in place or immediately available. Contingency planning is the key to success, therefore preventive and protective measures and incident response strategies should be carefully considered and impiemented. 

Successful installation, or roll-out, of your PSM systems requires sound planning and effective execution. No matter how diligent you have been, or how receptive and well-managed your company may be, no system as complex as PSM can work perfectly the first time. As every project manager knows, it s impossible to anticipate every outcome or contingency—especially when human behavior is involved. Pilot testing a new system provides the opportunity to identify weaknesses under controlled conditions this in turn enables you to fix problems before the system becomes fully operational. Once these problems are corrected, the pilot test produces a template for installation that can be replicated elsewhere. 

Succession planning may be almost impossible but at least make contingencies.
