The subject of surface viscosity is a somewhat complicated one it has been reviewed by several groups [95,96], and here we restrict our discussion to its measurement via surface shear and scattering from capillary waves. [Pg.118]

The drop in pressure when a stream of gas or liquid flows over a surface can be estimated from the given approximate formula if viscosity effects are ignored. The example calculation reveals that, with the sorts of gas flows common in a concentric-tube nebulizer, the liquid (the sample solution) at the end of the innermost tube is subjected to a partial vacuum of about 0.3 atm. This vacuum causes the liquid to lift out of the capillary, where it meets the flowing gas stream and is broken into an aerosol. For cross-flow nebulizers, the vacuum created depends critically on the alignment of the gas and liquid flows but, as a maximum, it can be estimated from the given formula. [Pg.141]

In discussing Fig. 4.1 we noted that the apparent location of Tg is dependent on the time allowed for the specific volume measurements. Volume contractions occur for a long time below Tg The lower the temperature, the longer it takes to reach an equilibrium volume. The resistance to plastic flow can be schematically illustrated by dashpots with characteristic viscosities. The coefficient Tj is termed the modulus of rigidity. The viscosities of thixotropic fluids fall with time when subjected to a constant rate of strain, but recover upon standing. This behavior is associated with the reversible breakdown of stmctures within the fluid which are gradually reestabflshed upon cessation of shear. The smooth sprea ding of paint following the intense shear of a bmsh or spray is an example of thixotropic behavior. When viscosity rises with time at constant rate of strain, the fluid is termed rheopectic. This behavior is much less common but is found in some clay suspensions, gypsum suspensions, and certain sols. [Pg.96]

Antiwear premium hydrauHc fluids represent the largest volume of hydrauHc fluids used. Shortly after their introduction in 1960, a second product group was formulated, characterized by the same antiwear characteristics but having lower pour points and higher viscosity indexes. These were formulated for use in mobile and marine appHcations subject to temperature extremes. [Pg.262]

Lubricants. Petroleum lubricants continue to be the mainstay for automotive, industrial, and process lubricants. Synthetic oils are used extensively in industry and for jet engines they, of course, are made from hydrocarbons. Since the viscosity index (a measure of the viscosity behavior of a lubricant with change in temperature) of lube oil fractions from different cmdes may vary from +140 to as low as —300, additional refining steps are needed. To improve the viscosity index (VI), lube oil fractions are subjected to solvent extraction, solvent dewaxing, solvent deasphalting, and hydrogenation. Furthermore, automotive lube oils typically contain about 12—14% additives. These additives maybe oxidation inhibitors to prevent formation of gum and varnish, corrosion inhibitors, or detergent dispersants, and viscosity index improvers. Low Temperature Brittleness. Brittleness temperature is the temperature at which polyethylene becomes sufficiently brittle to break when subjected to a sudden blow. Because some polyethylene end products are used under particularly cold climates, they must be made of a polymer that has good impact resistance at low temperatures namely, polymers with high viscosity, lower density, and narrow molecular weight distribution. The WAG process has been used extensively in the field, particularly in supercritical CO2 injection, with considerable success (22,157,158). However, a method to further reduce the viscosity of injected gas or supercritical fluid is desired. One means of increasing the viscosity of CO2 is through the use of supercritical C02-soluble polymers and other additives (159). The use of surfactants to form low mobihty foams or supercritical CO2 dispersions within the formation has received more attention (160—162). Foam has also been used to reduce mobihty of hydrocarbon gases and nitrogen. The behavior of foam in porous media has been the subject of extensive study (4). Wax usually refers to a substance that is a plastic solid at ambient temperature and that, on being subjected to moderately elevated temperatures, becomes a low viscosity hquid. Because it is plastic, wax usually deforms under pressure without the appHcation of heat. The physical properties of spray-dried materials are subject to considerable variation, depending on the direction of flow of the inlet gas and its temperature, the degree and uniformity of atomization, the solids content of the feed, the temperature of the feed, and the degree of aeration of the feed. In turn this may require more powerful extruders. They are also more subject to melt irregularities such as sharkskin and melt fracture.
