Subject names

One important feature in some of the new examination regulations is the recognition of the candidate s signed record of laboratory work. We are, in fact, beginning to discover an inherent. defect in practical chemistry as an examination subject, namely, its resistance to compression into a compact and convenient examination form. 

This chapter is concerned with two subjects, namely thermodynamics and kinetics.

This author is perfectly aware that he could add very little to the work done by these workers if an attempt was made to focus on intramolecular catalysis phenomena or on the relevance to cyclisation of available models of chain conformation and chain dynamics instead, the aim will be the presentation of a general treatment of the subject, namely, one that includes the cyclisation of very short chains as well as that of very long chains of, say, 100 atoms or more. With a subject as vast as this, an encyclopaedic review would be a hopeless task. Therefore, the subject will be treated in a systematic and critical way, with more concentration on reaction series with regular and wide variations in structure, rather than on scattered examples. The aim will be to show that the field of intramolecular reactions is a mature area in which the merging of concepts from both physical organic chemistry and polymer chemistry leads to a unified treatment of cyclisation rates and equilibria in terms of a few simple generalisations and theories.

The third chapter, by J. F. Stoddart, is concerned with a very hot subject, namely, the stereochemical aspects of crown ether chemistry. Many chapters have been written on this topic Stoddart s concentrates on the synthesis of a variety of chiral crown ethers and surveys some of their uses in different areas of physical, chemical, and biological science. 

Discussion in this section is confined to the matter mentioned in the introduction, which has provided such a fresh and energetic impetus to this whole subject, namely the direct and quantitative correlation between the amounts of several specific and identifiable photoproducts formed in the photolysis of nucleic acids and the amount of inactivation of the nucleic acid biological function. This specific area, however, is one which has drawn much attention, and to which several of the recent reviews are devoted.8,10,113"90 There is little need to extend these excellent articles, and so a comprehensive survey of the literature will not be attempted here, but merely a summary and interpretation. 

This points to one of the great weaknesses in our understanding of this subject, namely our lack of knowledge of the thermodynamics of many of these processes. This is difficult to come by because many of these redox steps are not reversible hence we cannot obtain thermodynamic data in the usual way from equilibrium studies and must instead resort to thermochemical measurements of which we need more. 

The invention of percussion compositions for igniting powders is usually attributed to Forsyth [5]. In 1805 he employed pellets composed of a mixture of potassium chlorate and combustible materials, coated with wax to render them safer to handle, but even so they were still dangerous since the mixture was sensitive to friction. The first ignition caps were invented in the early nineteenth century. In these caps the ignitable composition was enclosed in a casing of brass or copper. This invention cannot be traced with any certainty to any individual. The literature on the subject names several chemists including Bellot and Egg in 1815 [5].

This monograph originated from an investigation of one particular subject, namely the ring analysis of mineral oils, which work was carried out by the author in collaboration with Dr. J. C. Enantioselective anion sensing is included in a number of reviews covering much broader subjects, namely receptors of anions in general [2-8] and chro-mophoric sensors of anions [9,10]. There are also more specialized reviews dealing with receptors for anions based on macrocyclic polyamines [11], amides [12],... 

When you first obtain your notebook, put your name and the laboratory subject name on the cover. On the first page, record your name, your local address, your e-mail address, and telephone number plus a permanent home address and the date. Leave the next five or six pages blank so there will be room for a detailed table of contents. For each experiment undertaken, make an entry for it in this table of contents, indicating the page nmnber and the date on which work began. If a long experiment has logical subdivisions, these should also be entered in the table of contents. 

I want to deal with what may at first seem to be an impersonal subject, namely Bob as a scientist. However, while a person is not defined by what he does, he is by how he does it. A couple of days ago, I found a quote by Hans Mohr that describes good science. When I read this quote, I was sure that he was describing Bob.

Before the x-ray method is examined in any detail, it is advisable to consider first a more general subject, namely, the difference between applied stress and residual stress, and to gain a clear idea of what these terms mean. Consider a metal bar deformed elastically, for example in uniform tension. The applied stress is given simply by the applied force per unit area of cross section.
