Subject methodology

Forty-five subjects were included in this series, which was accomplished over a period of 18 months while inhalation and other studies were being conducted. Doses were assigned as follows [0.5 mcg/kg - 4 subjects], [1.0 mcg/kg - 8 subjects], [2.0 mcg/kg - 8 subjects], [3.0 mcg/kg - 3 subjects], [4.0 mcg/kg - 5 subjects], [6.0 mcg/kg - 6 subjects], [7.0 mcg/kg - 6 subjects], [8.0 mcg/kg - 7 subjects]. Methodology and completeness of documentation were much more comprehensive.

The evaluation methods we will discuss in this chapter are instrumental methods that provide objective and quantifiable assessments of treatment effects. Such methods are critically important for claim substantiations and are eurrently or will in the future be required by governmental agencies in this country and abroad. We decided to leave out the subjective methodology used in panel evaluations and eonsumer testing, since all companies in the cosmetic field have their own in-house evaluation procedures, which unfortunately are not yet standardized throughout the industry. For the same reason, we have not included comparisons between objective instrumental methods and subjective evaluation procedures.

That set of modules includes alongside the traditional procedures related to product control, quality assurance procedures for conformity assessment. The intervention of a third party in these procedures comprises an initial audit of the manufacturer s quality system which must include both the specific technological aspects of the products concerned and the methodology of the quality assurance procedures. Furthermore the manufacturers are subject to periodic audits to ensure that the systems are maintained. Finally, on the occasion of unexpected visits, the notified body can carry out tests on the products. 

Vibrational spectroscopy is an enomiously large subject area spamiing many scientific disciplines. The methodology, both experimental and theoretical, was developed primarily by physical chemists and has branched far and wide over the last 50 years. This chapter will mainly focus on its importance with regard to physical chemistry. 

There have been numerous communications on the subject of biodegradation test methods, including aerobic compost (30), anaerobic bioreactor (31), general methodology and future directions (32—34), and a fine review article (24). ASTM (22) and MITI (35) have also set forth standard testing protocols for plastics, as shown in Table 2, whereas OECD test methods (29) are more suited to water-soluble polymers.

Europe, the USA and Japan are under way. In these studies, semen analysis methodology and subject selection criteria have been standardised to address whether there are region-specific differences in semen quality. These data can then be used as a reference point for any studies on future decline in sperm counts. More importantly, it still remains to be demonstrated whether the reported decrease in semen quality is sufficient to compromise fertility. 

Figure 27.1 summarises the methodology for designing a component which must carry load. At the start there are two parallel streams materials selection and component design. A tentative material is chosen and data for it are assembled from data sheets like the ones given in this book or from data books (referred to at the end of this chapter). At the same time, a tentative component design is drawn up, able to fill the function (which must be carefully defined at the start) and an approximate stress analysis is carried out to assess the stresses, moments, and stress concentrations to which it will be subjected. 

It is conceptually impossible to be complete in a mathematical sense in the constmctioii oi event trees and fault trees. What matters is the approach to completeness and the abihiy lo demonstrate with reasonable assurance that only small contributions are omitted. This inherent limitation means that any calculation using this methodology is always subject to revision and to doubt as to its completeness. 

Subject scales are useful in the measurement of subjective responses of persons exposed to thermal environments. They are particularly useful in moderate environments and can be used independently or to complement the use of the objective methods (e.g., thermal indices) that were described previously. ISO EN 10551 presents the principles and methodology behind the construction and use of subjective scales and provides examples of scales that can be used to assess thermal environments. 

Articles describing procedures related to the DIERS development of this entire subject have been published by some members of the DIERS group. These are referenced here, but to adequately describe the methodology requires more space than is suitable for this chapter. The detailed descriptions and illustrations in the noted articles can be most helpful to the potential user.
