Subject extrusion

Subject to the limitations indicated, control over extrusion process products is consistent enough to make a uniform repeatable product once the limitations are accommodated. Here, as in other processing, good communication between the processor and the designer will help make for a successful economical product. [Pg.283]

Radical induced grafting may be carried out in solution, in the melt phase,292 29 or as a solid state process.296 This section will focus on melt phase grafting to polyolefin substrates but many of the considerations are generic. The direct grafting of monomers onto polymers, in particular polyolefins, in the melt phase by reactive extrusion has been widely studied. Most recently, the subject has been reviewed by Moad1 9 and by Russell.292 More details on reactive extrusion as a technique can be found in volumes edited by Xanthos," A1 Malaika and Baker et a 21 7 The process most often involves combining a frcc-radical initiator (most commonly a peroxide) and a monomer or macromonomer with the polyolefin as they are conveyed through the extruder. Monomers commonly used in this context include MAII (Section 7.6.4.1), maleimidc derivatives and malcate esters (Section 7.6.4.2), (meth)acrylic acid and (meth)acrylate esters (Section 7.6.43), S, AMS and derivatives (Section 7.6.4.4), vinylsilancs (Section 7.6.4.5) and vinyl oxazolines (Section 7.6.4.6). [Pg.390]

Purely thermal denaturation of proteins requires much longer times collagen in moist heat below 120 °C needs 30 min to denature (Meyer et ah, 2005), wheat glutens must be subjected to 200-215 °C of dry heat for 72 min (Friedman et ah, 1987), and as mentioned above, whey proteins require at least 50 °C and 30 min for texturization without the use of extrusion processing. [Pg.180]

Often troubleshooting guides are provided by equipment manufacturers for common problems. These guides are helpful for many of the simpler problems associated with the equipment. Some resin manufacturers are an excellent resource for troubleshooting processing problems that are specific to a resin. Subject matter experts or extrusion consultants are also resources for troubleshooting an extrusion process. [Pg.410]

Elliott and co-workers performed a detailed SAXS investigation of the morphology of Nafion membranes that were subjected to uniaxial and biaxial deformation. For as-received membranes, manufactured by Du Pont using an extrusion process, the cluster reflection was shown to exhibit a limited degree of arching in the direction perpendicular to the machine direction. Upon uniaxial extension, this arching was observed to increase in a manner consistent with previous studies. This arching was rationalized on... [Pg.307]

Other approaches to alkylidenecycloproparenes have been attempted without success. Aromatization of appropriate alkylidenecyclopropanes or their precursors could not be realized, and flash vacuum pyrolysis of methylene phthalide and 3-methylene-2-coumaranone afforded rearrangement products rather than alkylidenecycloproparenes via extrusion of 002. The photochemical or thermal decomposition of the sodium salt of benzocyclobutenone p-toluenesulfonyl hydrazone led to products derived from dimerization of the intermediate benzocy-clobutenylidene, or from its reaction with the solvent, but no ring-contracted products were observed. When the adduct of methylene-l,6-methano[10]annulene to dicyanoacetylene (249) was subjected to Alder-Rickert cleavage, phenylacety-lene (250) was formed, which derives reasonably from the parent 234. ... [Pg.67]

Heat stabilizers are added to materials to impart protection against heat-induced decomposition. Such stabilizers are needed to protect a material when it is subjected to a thermal-intense process (such as melt extrusion) or when the material is employed under conditions where increased heat stability is needed. [Pg.489]

Barium titanate is made by sintering a finely powdered mixture of barium carbonate and titanium dioxide in a furnace at 1,350°C. The calcined mass is finely ground and mixed with a binder (plastic). The mixture is subjected to extrusion, pressing or film casting to obtain ceramic bodies of desired shapes. Plastic is burnt off by heating and the shaped body is sintered by firing and then pobshed. [Pg.95]

Schkeryantz and Pearson (59) reported a total synthesis of ( )-crinane (298) using an intramolecular azide-alkene cycloaddition (Scheme 9.59). The allylic acetate 294 was first subjected to an Ireland-Claisen rearrangement followed by reduction to give alcohol 295, which was then converted into the azide 296 using Mitsunobu conditions. Intramolecular cycloaddition of the azide 296 in refluxing toluene followed by extrusion of nitrogen gave the imine 297 in quantitative yield. On reduction with sodium cyanoborohydride and subsequent reaction with... [Pg.660]

Melt filtration systems are commonly employed in pigment master-batch production and in situations where the presence of defects in the compound may have a critical effect on its subsequent processing or properties. This is vitally important, for example, in fibre-spinning operations involving extrusion of polyester or polyamide through fine spinneret plates [162], and in minimizing breakdown of polymer cable insulation subjected to electrical stress [163]. [Pg.207]
