Succinylcholine is an ultra-short-acting depolarizing skeletal muscle relaxant. Paralysis usually appears in the following muscles consecutively levator muscles of the eyelids, muscles of mastication, limb muscles, abdominal muscles, muscles of the glottis, and finally, the intercostals, the diaphragm, and all other skeletal muscles. Recovery of normal muscle tone follows the reverse order. [Pg.655]

Because cholinesterase is synthesized in the liver, succinyl-choline s duration of action is elevated in the presence of liver disease. Cholinesterase inhibitors dramatically increase succinylcholine s duration of action. In patients with atypical cholinesterase, the intensity and duration of succinylcholine s effects are enhanced. [Pg.655]

Succinylcholine is contraindicated in patients with genetic disorders of plasma pseudocholinesterase because of the potential for impaired metabolism in patients with personal or family history of malignant hyperthermia because [Pg.655]

Clinical manifestations of overdose include apnea or prolonged muscle paralysis, which may be treated with controlled respiration. [Pg.655]

Sucralfate is a GI agent that adheres to ulcer in acidic gastric juice, forming a protective layer that serves as a barrier against acid, bile salts, and enzymes present in the stomach and duodenum. It is indicated in short-term treatment of duodenal ulcer and maintenance therapy of duodenal ulcer (tablets only). [Pg.655]

Clinical features Priapism is defined as a painful and unwanted erection, which is classified as stuttering (less than 3 hours), often multiple prolonged (more than 3 hours). Up to 89% of males with SCD will have at least one episode by age 20. The mean age of the initial episode is 12 years of age. Repeated episodes can cause fibrosis and impotence. [Pg.1007]

Signs and symptoms Prepubertal children often present with stuttering priapism. Older males can present with prolonged episodes that last for days and should be managed as medical emergencies. Urinary obstruction can occur in severe cases. [Pg.1007]

There s a hundred and thirty million people in this country and a couple million is Jews. It s you they want, not me. I m. . . I m, he started to stutter in his fury, I m chicken feed, I m nothin . All I m good for is they can point to me and everybody else will give them their brains and their money, and then they will have the country. It s a trick, it s a racket. 49... [Pg.199]

Tiagabine is an anti-convulsive medication also used in the treatment for panic disorder as are a few other anticonvulsants. It does appear to operate as a selective GABA reuptake inhibitor. Tiagabine s most common side effects include confusion, difficulty speaking clearly/stuttering and mild sedation. [Pg.359]

H. If a general medical condition or another mental disorder is present, the fear in Criterion A is unrelated to it, e.g., the fear is not of stuttering, trembling in Parkinson s disease, or exhibiting abnormal eating behavior in anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa. [Pg.385]

It s very intense, I call it a reality stutter, or a reality strobing. I think that having been a test pilot, and flying in that unforgiving environment with only two feet between our wingtips, helped to prepare me for this kind of exploration. [Pg.176]

If this problem—the sudden loss of flow, followed by the premature restoration of flow—occurs repeatedly over a period of a few hours, then layers of fouling deposits or coke are accumulated inside the tubes until a heater shutdown becomes unavoidable. This sort of failure is called a stuttering-feed interruption. [Pg.277]

Steam trap Used to drain water from a steam system, stuttering feed interruption Erratic flow of liquid into a heater, subcooled Liquid below its boiling point. [Pg.412]

Treatment with psychedelics has most often been described as ineffective in cases of hysterical neurosis and hysteria, stuttering neurosis, infantile personality, and long-term neurotic invalidism. Despite reported successes, compulsive syndromes, criminal psychopathy, and depressive states are also mentioned as contraindicated. The risks frequently have been considered too great for paranoids, severely depressed persons, outpatient psychotics and pre-psychotics, and those with a history of suicide attempts or who may be currently suicidal. However, as we have previously suggested (Masters and Houston, 1966), psychedelic therapy may be indicated in cases where suicide seems probable and imminent. By his being enabled to die symbolically and then be reborn, the patient s need to die may be subsequently eliminated. [Pg.325]
