M + e + hv). The structured background is produced by partially or completely overlapping atomic, ionic, or in some cases, molecular emission. To obtain precision better than 10% the concentration of an element must be at least 5 times the detection limit. 

As the previous ehapter discussed nuelear power reactor operation and how to perform a PSA on it, this chapter attempts to apply a similar framework to chemical processing. The problem is the diversity of chemical processing that blurs the focus. This chapter begins by showing that accidents in the chemical process industry cost lives and dollars. Descriptions of deadly chemical accidents arc presented to show the chain of sequences that were involved to suggest how their PSA may be structured. Background on selected hazardous chemical process is presented followed by descriptions of how their PSA have structured. The chapter concludes by applying FTAPSUIT to a pressure vessel rupture analysis. 

Grobenski et al. [709] have reviewed methodology for the determination of these elements in seawater. Zeeman-effect background correction using an AC magnet around the graphite furnace corrects for nonspecific attenuation up to 2.0 absorbance and corrects for structured background. 

Thus structural background suggests that the bound cyt c ccp adduct may actually consist of a distribution of structures. In this section, we consider the thermodynamics of binding cyt c and ccp, both for the native proteins, from different species, and proteins incorporating single site replacements, as prepared by site directed mutagenesis.

Other background correction systems include the Zeeman effect and the Smith-Hieftje background correction. A detailed description of the operational principles of these methods is beyond the scope of this chapter and the required information can be found in the relevant literature.7,13 The advantages of these methods over deuterium lamps are that high background signals (up to 2.0 units) and structured backgrounds can easily be corrected for.

There is no high-resolution three-dimensional structure available for any of the mammalian ABC transporters, thus the structural background of the MDR molecular mechanism is currently unresolved. A low-resolution structure of the MDR1 [37] indicates that the protein is embedded into the membrane as a cylinder with a large central pore, which is closed at the inner (cytoplasmic) face of the membrane. This structure also included an opening of this cylinder to the lipid phase. 

This approach is not always adequate if wide spectral ranges (several GHz) are required, due to fi-equency dependent reflections and resonances. The dimensions are so small and the measurements of complex impedance so difficult at MMW frequencies that careful experimentation is usually the only practical way to achieve optimisation. The result has been apertures in the range 2-5 mm wide X 0.2-0.5 mm high, or circular holes of 1-3 mm diameter in brass septa about 100 fim thick for frequencies in the 20-200 GHz region. The criteria for success have been whether the frequency range and sensitivity were adequate and the MMW structure background reasonably flat at the desired operating frequency (Section 6.1).
