Cost of Living

Everyone is predicting that utility rates will rise, but how much is uncertain. In general they have not risen as much as the cost of living. A 3% rise per year will be assumed. Then the total utilities cost in 1974 will be 0.00100/lb P.S. 

I didn t take the position because I couldn t negotiate a salary that was commensurate with the cost of living there. For example, home replacement would run about 200,000. I didn t see that the salary was going to cover that and still provide a 5-10% increase to my base salary. 

Researching location options can be the most enjoyable part of retirement planning. Take a two-step approach to picking a potential location. Start by reading books and magazine articles. There is a wealth of information available. You can consider places based on how they rate on such issues as cost of living, climate, services and activities available, crime rate, and employment opportunities. 

Some of the more popular countries for U.S. retirees are Mexico, Canada, the Philippines, and Costa Rica. By far, the nation with the largest population of U.S. retirees is Mexico. More than 1,000,000 live there, attracted by its low cost of living. Canada attracts U.S. retirees with its natural beauty, more sedate lifestyle, and cosmopolitan cities. The Philippines is popular with retired military personnel, who have experience with the area and with Philippine-Americans. Its main attractions are beautiful geography, lush tropical settings, and a rich cultural past. Costa Rica is a free and stable democracy that enjoys peace. (It is one of the few nations in the world without an army, and has the highest literacy rate in the Western world.) It is a beautiful country with moderate temperatures, and there is no tax on pensions or other income from abroad.

You can also feel good that you are providing work for others. If your store can sustain several employees, you are doing your part to combat unemployment. You must show your appreciation for your excellent employees by paying them enough to live, which means cost of living increases each year and, if you can, health benefits and paid time off.

Denmark. The government statistical department publishes annually statistics on population, weather, surface area, employment, housing, agriculture, industry (numbers employed in different branches), output of principal products (virtually no chemicals), fuel and power supplies, transport, consumption of food and staple commodities, cost of living, wholesale and retail prices, public finance, social insurance, and education. This publication (11) is in French as well as Danish. 

Greece. Statistics on currency, banking, and other financial matters, indexes on cost of living and on output of the main industries are published in the Monthly Bulletin of the Bank of Greece 43). This is published in English as well as Greek. Official monthly returns of imports and exports are published in English (44)-... 

Spain. Monthly official statistics on population, health, mining and industrial production, foreign trade, transportation, finance, labor, and cost of living are available (68). Chemical production statistics are given for the materials listed in Table V. 

Switzerland. Statistics on banking and finance, share price movements, employment and unemployment, foreign trade, wholesale price movements, cost of living indexes, agricultural prices, and balance of payments are published in (84)-Official returns of imports and exports are published annually (83) and monthly (85). 

The Economic Research Institute, which tracks salary and cost of living statistics in the United States, projects that the average salary for a food chemist will be 92,000 by the year 2020.
