Stress-related headaches

The fact that Judy filled out a near-hit report is certainly good news, but was this a complete report Were there some personal factors within Judy that could have influenced the incident Was Judy under stress or distress and, if so, could this have been a contributing factor It has been estimated that from 75 to 85 percent of all industrial injuries can be partially attributed to inappropriate reactions to stress (Jones, 1984). Furthermore, stress-related headaches are the leading cause of lost-work time in the United States (Jones, 1984). [Pg.90]

The links between levels of exposure and inconvenience caused by ventilation noise are described in an investigation carried out on office workers.- Technical measurements and analyses of the ventilation noise at 155 typical office workplaces were in this study combined with assessments by the office workers of the level of disturbance that they experienced, the effect on working performance, fatigue, stress-related pain, and headaches. The average noise level was about 40 dB(A) at two of the workplaces, while it was about 35 dB(A) at two others. It emerged from rhe narrow-band analyses that the sound pressure levels of rhe infrasound were not in any event of an order that this type of sound frequencies (below 20 Hz) could contribute to any disturbance effects. Any steps taken to counter the sound frequencies of the ventilation noise under 50 Hz, i.e., the point of btersection between the threshold curve of auditory perception and the spectral level distribution curve of... [Pg.346]

The effects go on to include the family of the targets, damaging marriages and transferring feelings of guilt and shame onto their children. Physical aches and pain are common, including headache, nausea, stomachaches, skin rashes, sleep difficulties, and other stress-related illnesses. Stress can lead to heart disease, suicide, diabetes, and complicate a host of other illnesses. [Pg.318]

There are several reports of noteworthy extrapulmonary effects in laboratory animals with concentrations of about 0.2 ppm. These include reduced voluntary activity, chromosomal aberrations in circulating lymphocytes of hamsters, increased neonatal mortality, and greater incidence of jaw abnormalities in offspring of ozone-exposed mice. The mechanisms of these reported effects and whether th are due to direct actions of absorbed ozone, some secondary reaction product, or secondary responses to the stress of local actions in the lung are largely unknown. However, reported analogous effects in humans exposed to ozone, such as changes in visual acuity and headache (possibly related to the reduced activity in... [Pg.375]

In an interesting report, a worker in a CN-producing chemical plant who was known to be insensitive to the odor of CN (Nicholson Vincenti, 1994) gradually developed unusual symptoms while on the job. Initially, when he approached the CN work area, he reported feeling dizzy and weak and developed a headache and shortness of breath. These attacks interfered with job performance as they increased in frequency and severity and eventually began to occur during safety lectures on CN. A severe phobic anxiety for CN was diagnosed, likely associated with combined personal and work-related stress. [Pg.89]
