Ellagic acid has been reported to be present in berries, particularly raspberries (Rubus idaeus), strawberries, and blackberries [Amakura et al., 2000]. However, free ellagic acid is normally present in low levels in berries that more commonly contain ellagitannins, such as sanguiin H-6 and lambertianin C, which release ellagic and gallic acid when treated with acid (Fig. 1.26) [Mullen et al., 2002],... [Pg.22]

Raspberry (Rubus idaeus L.) honey is white, with a very pleasant aroma and delicious flavor. Raspberry comb honey is so tasty that it seems to melt in the mouth. This honey comes from the blossoms of the raspberry, which grows in woods and orchards throughout the territories of the former U.S.S.R. It is particularly plentiful in forests of Siberia, the Urals, and Kirov, Gorky, and other regions, and holds a place of importance among fruit and berry plants. [Pg.402]

The antioxidant activity of anthocyanins in the fruits and leaves from different cultivars of the thornless blackberry (Rubus sp.), red raspberry (Rubus idaeus L.), black raspberry (Rubus occidentalis L.) and strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa D.) was reported [54]. Studies on the ability of endothelial cells (EC) to incorporate anthocyanins and on the potential benefits against various oxidative stressors showed that the enrichment of EC with elderberry anthocyanins gave significant protective effects in the endothelial cells against the oxidative stressors, hydrogen peroxide, 2,2/-azobis(2-amidinopropane) dihydrochloride, and iron(II) sulfate/ascorbic acid [55]. [Pg.55]
