In November 1990 a fire occurred at a flammable liquid tank farm supporting Denver s Stapleton international airport. Eight of the farm s twelve storage tanks contained jet fuel, totaling almost 4.2 million gallons. The fire burned for 55 hours, destroying seven tanks. 

Cone roof storage tanks could he correlated using /lb of steel vs. weight, but the roof support for larger tanks is difficult to estimate, as is the overall thickness. 

Pressure storage tanks should be coirelated using /lb vs. w eight, much the same as other pressure vessels. Materials of construction, of course, would be another variable. Special internals, insulation, and internal heat exchangers should again be separated from the base cost of the tank. Where overfilling or leakage from the tank would contribute to a fire hazard, cause damage to property or contaminate drains or sewers, a bund wall should be constructed around the tank. This should be of brick or concrete with an oil-tight lining, and sealed to the concrete base under the tank supports. The capacity of the bunded area should be at least 10 per cent greater than that of the storage tanks contained within it. 

Consider the explosion of a propane-air vapor cloud confined beneath a storage tank. The tank is supported 1 m off the ground by concrete piles. The concentration of vapor in the cloud is assumed to be at stoichiometric concentrations. Assume a cloud volume of 2094 m3, confined below the tank, representing the volume underneath the tank. Determine the overpressure from this vapor cloud explosion at a distance of 100 m from the blast using the TNO multi-energy method. 

Initial capital costs for the Alpheus Model 250 and support equipment used during this experiment are as follows Alpheus Model 250, 107,000 compressor, 81,000 CO2 storage tank, 46,000 air dryer, 21,000. Total capital costs were listed at 255,000 (D15087I, p. 10). 

Underwriters Laboratories (UL) also approves and rates storage tanks. Factors including tank wall thickness, type of metal used, welding procedure, venting, supports, pressure ratings, and other related topics are specifically defined in the approval codes. Guidelines which relate directly to the storage of flammable and combustible materials are provided under UL Code 142. 

Large storage tanks are supported on a concrete pad on the ground. Other vessels are supported off the ground by various means, as in Figure 18.14. 

Cost data for mixing tanks including agitators, storage tanks, and pressure tanks are presented in Figs. 14-56 to 14-58 while Table 5 gives costs for selected containers. In determining the total cost for the vessel, allowances must be made for nozzles on the unit, supports and foundations, platforms, labor, and indirect costs as well as for all of the internals in the vessel. ... 

Spill Containment Basin. Impervious liners for earthen basins is another use for sulfur composites. A spill containment basin surrounding several bulk storage tanks was lined as a joint project between Chevron, The Sulphur Development Institute of Canada, and The Environmental Protection Service of Canada (Figure 7). For this particular application, the lining requirements were durability, sufficient strength to support foot traffic, and resistance to an arctic climate. 

Project development The development of a mining site and supporting infrastructure causes extensive land clearance. Also, groundwater and surface water contamination can be caused by spills and leaks from fuel storage tanks, and from waste disposal.
