Most emphasis is placed on a program of rigorous preventive maintenance. Appropriate climate conditions can help to prevent mold attack, which typically only occurs at elevated relative humidity. Storage furniture which provides an effective barrier for insects, regular inspection of the collections, monitoring of all collection areas with insect traps, and access control measures which minimize the chance of insect entry into the collection areas, are some aspects of an effective pest control management program (175). 

Protective packaging is primarily required to prevent moisture pickup. The flavor quaUty of regular instant coffee changes very tittle during storage. However, the powder is hygroscopic and moisture pickup can cause caking and flavor impairment. Moisture content should be kept below 5%.

Store and use in sueh a way that aeeidental ingress of water, or eontaet with it, is avoided (roofs of storage areas should he regularly maintained to minimize leaks).

All protective clothing should be maintained in a sound condition, cleaned/washed/replaced regularly as appropriate, and be stored apart from everyday clothing. With toxic chemicals a double locker system is advisable. With highly toxic substances, e.g. lead compounds or asbestos-based substances, separate storage of personal clotliing and protective clotliing is specifically requhed. 

The first vessel in the blowdown system is therefore an acid-hydrocarbon separator. This drum is provided with a pump to transfer disengaged acid to the spent acid tank. Disengaged liquid hydrocarbon is preferably pumped back to the process, or to slop storage or a regular non-condensible lowdown drum. The vented vapor stream from the acid-hydrocarbon separator is bubbled through a layer of caustic soda solution in a neutralizing drum and is then routed to the flare header. To avoid corrosion in the special acid blowdown system, no releases which may contain water or alkaline solutions are routed into it. 

In the vent pipes of storage tanks containing a flammable mixture of vapor and air (Section 5.4.1). Such flame traps should be inspected regularly and cleaned if necessary. Section 5.3 a described how a tank was sucked in because the flame arrestors on all three vents had not been cleaned for two years. 

With storage tanks which are filled from the bottom such as large vertical tanks, the stirring action of incoming oil will carry any water (which would normally settle out) into the oil-handling system. In these circumstances, any daily service tank used in the system should receive regular inspection to ensure that water has not accumulated. Any oil/water mixtures should be drained into suitable containers and subsequently removed for disposal into a separator or interceptor.

Organic chemicals Most organic liquids, other than the stronger acids, only attack zinc slowly. Zinc is, therefore, suitable for storage tanks for liquid hydrocarbons such as motor fuels, for phenols and for trichlorethy-lene degreasers. Zinc or zinc-coated vessels are not recommended for use in contact with acid foodstuffs, but are regularly used for dry foods. Zinc in small quantities is beneficial in the human diet.
