FIGURE 12.2 Responses of beavers to predator chemicals applied to aspen sticks. Activity periods were consecutive 5 days of experiment in two areas in New York and the percentages of sticks consumed is the mean of several replications of the experiment. All treated sticks were punctured to improve the uptake of chemicals intact sticks were untreated (A), punctured but not treated ( ), punctured and treated with the solvent methanol ( ) (the three controls), or treated with extracts from other animals. Treatments that inhibited consumption most were excrement extracts from lynx (+) and coyote ( ... ), both sympatric predators (lynx now extirpated). Beavers accepted most readily the three control sets. Other chemicals were from otter (o), wolf ( - ), lion ( ). (From Engelhart and Miiller-Schwarze,... [Pg.368]

To avoid these problems, refiners commonly use additives called detergents" (Hall et al., 1976), (Bert et al., 1983). These are in reality surfactants made from molecules having hydrocarbon chains long enough to ensure their solubility in the fuel and a polar group that enables them to be absorbed on the walls and prevent deposits from sticking. The most effective chemical structures are succinimides, imides, and fatty acid amines. The required dosages are between 500 and 1000 ppm of active material. [Pg.243]

Mention was made in Section XVIII-2E of programmed desorption this technique gives specific information about both the adsorption and the desorption of specific molecular states, at least when applied to single-crystal surfaces. The kinetic theory involved is essentially that used in Section XVI-3A. It will be recalled that the adsorption rate was there taken to be simply the rate at which molecules from the gas phase would strike a site area times the fraction of unoccupied sites. If the adsorption is activated, the fraction of molecules hitting and sticking that can proceed to a chemisorbed state is given by exp(-E /RT). The adsorption rate constant of Eq. XVII-13 becomes... [Pg.705]

Another limitation of tire Langmuir model is that it does not account for multilayer adsorption. The Braunauer, Ennnett and Teller (BET) model is a refinement of Langmuir adsorption in which multiple layers of adsorbates are allowed [29, 31]. In the BET model, the particles in each layer act as the adsorption sites for the subsequent layers. There are many refinements to this approach, in which parameters such as sticking coefficient, activation energy, etc, are considered to be different for each layer. [Pg.298]

The addition of potassium to Fe single crystals also enliances the activity for ammonia synthesis. Figure A3.10.19 shows the effect of surface potassium concentration on the N2 sticking coefficient. There is nearly a 300-fold increase in the sticking coefficient as the potassium concentration reaches -1.5 x 10 K atoms cm ... [Pg.946]

Antiperspirant sticks based on this mol ding technique have become more popular since volatile low mol wt cyclomethicones [69430-24-6] have been used successfully as the Hpids and fatty alcohols as the waxes. This type of product deHvers the active antiperspirant to the site as a clinging powder without excessive oiliness. [Pg.294]

These results demonstrate some interesting chemical principles of the use of acrylic adhesives. They stick to a broad range of substrates, with some notable exceptions. One of these is galvanized steel, a chemically active substrate which can interact with the adhesive and inhibit cure. Another is Noryl , a blend of polystyrene and polyphenylene oxide. It contains phenol groups that are known polymerization inhibitors. Highly non-polar substrates such as polyolefins and silicones are difficult to bond with any technology, but as we shall see, the initiator can play a big role in acrylic adhesion to polyolefins. [Pg.824]

The sticking coefficient at zero coverage, Sq T), contains the dynamic information about the energy transfer from the adsorbing particle to the sohd which gives rise to its temperature dependence, for instance, an exponential Boltzmann factor for activated adsorption. [Pg.465]

The feasibility of the fast neutron bulk activation detection system and of other bulk nitrogen measurement systems is in serious question. The nitrogen present in innocent, common, and completely legitimate materials to be found in suitcases varies sufficiently that the estimated minimum detectable amount of explosive in this system is around 25 to 50 sticks of 40% dyji3=... [Pg.385]

The dependence of friction on sliding velocity is more complicated. Apparent stick-slip motions between SAM covered mica surfaces were observed at the low velocity region, which would disappear when the sliding velocity excesses a certain threshold [35]. In AFM experiments when the tip scanned over the monolayers at low speeds, friction force was reported to increase with the logarithm of the velocity, which is similar to that observed when the tip scans on smooth substrates. This is interpreted in terms of thermal activation that results in depinning of interfacial atoms in case that the potential barrier becomes small [36]. [Pg.89]

It has been recognized that the behavior of atomic friction, such as stick-slip, creep, and velocity dependence, can be understood in terms of the energy structure of multistable states and noise activated motion. Noises like thermal activities may cause the atom to jump even before AUq becomes zero, but the time when the atom is activated depends on sliding velocity in such a way that for a given energy barrier, AI/q the probability of activation increases with decreasing velocity. It has been demonstrated [14] that the mechanism of noise activation leads to "the velocity... [Pg.175]

Sample Collection and Enzyme Stability. Serum samples are collected with chemically clean, sterile glassware. Blood is allowed to clot at room temperature, the clot is gently separated from the test tube with an applicator stick, and the blood is centrifuged for 10 minutes at 1,000 g. If the red cells are known to contain the enzymes whose activity is being measured, as in the case of LD, even slightly hemolyzed serums must be discarded. When acid phosphatase is to be measured, the serum should be placed immediately in ice and processed as soon as possible, or it should be acidified by the addition of a small amount of sodium citrate. Anticoagulants such as EDTA, fluoride and oxalate inhibit some serum enzymes. However, heparin activates serum lipoprotein lipase. [Pg.190]
