Historically, these sulfonates have been difficult to produce in good quaUty and to formulate into laundry powders because of thermal and hydrolytic stabihty problems. Used basically as an anionic, oleochemically sourced replacement for LAS, FAE sulfonate benefits include good detergency at low concentration, low environmental load, and good supply of high quaUty material (71). To avoid possible thermal stabihty problems, these sulfonates have found apphcation in Hquid products. They are used in at least one U.S. dishwashing Hquid, and the cocoyl derivative, Alpha-Step MC48, is marketed by Stepan Chemical Company. 

Materials. Emulsifier A very pure grade of sodium lauryl sulfate (Stepanol WA-100) was obtained from Stepan Chemical Company and was used directly from the bottle.

Experimental Materials. The emulsifiers used were sodium lauryl sulfate, SLS (Stepan Chemical Company) and hexadecyltrimethylammonium-bromide, HTAB (Fisher Scientific Company). The SLS was purified by recrystallization from absolute ethanol and dried at 20°C under vacuum. The SLS was then Soxhlet-extracted with diethyl ether for 48 hours, dried under vacuum at 20°C, and stored under vacuum at 5°C until use.

In the United States there are five production plants owned by BASF. ExxonMobil, Koppers, Stepan Chemical, and Sterling Chemicals all have phthalic anhydride production plants of approximately equal size. These US plants represented a combined productive capacity of about 1.2 billion pounds annually for phthalic anhydride. However, since the demand for phthalate plasticizers is significantly decreasing, this capacity will probably also decrease.
