For a single fluid flowing through a section of reservoir rock, Darcy showed that the superficial velocity of the fluid (u) is proportional to the pressure drop applied (the hydrodynamic pressure gradient), and inversely proportional to the viscosity of the fluid. The permeability varies with temperature according to equation 12 where is a constant, E is the activation energy for permeation, E. is the gas constant, and Tis the absolute temperature. 

All organic coatings show varying degrees of solubility and permeability for components of the corrosive medium, which can be described as permeation and ionic conductivity (see Sections 5.2.1 and 5.2.2). An absolute separation of protected object and medium is not possible because of these properties. Certain requirements have to be met for corrosion protection, which must also take account of electrochemical factors [1] (see Section 5.2).

Three general test procedures used to measure the permeability of plastic films are the absolute pressure method, the isostatic method, and the quasi-isostatic method. The absolute pressure method (ASTM D 1434, Gas Transmission Rate of Plastic Film and Sheeting) is used when no gas other than the permeant in question is present. Between the two chambers a pressure differential provides the driving force for permeation. Here the change in pressure on the volume of the low-pressure chamber measures the permeation rate. 

Equation (15) ostensibly allows one to estimate permeability coefficients in units of cm/s. However, as with any parameter calculated from statistically drawn relationships, such estimates have to be taken with a grain of salt, because the absolute error of estimation for a single compound can be large.

Procedure. Core floods were carried out in horizontally mounted Berea sandstone cores of length 61 cm and diameter 5 cm. Porosity varied from 18 to 25% and brine permeability from 100 to 800 Jim2. The cores were coated with a thin layer of epoxy and cast in stainless steel core holders using molten Cerrobend alloy (melting point 70°C). The ends of the cores were machined flush with the core holder and flanges were bolted on. Pore volume was determined by vacuum followed by imbibition of brine. Absolute permeability and porosity were determined. The cores were initially saturated with brine (2% NaCl). An oil flood was then started at a rate of lOm/day until an irreducible water saturation (26-38%) was established.

To emphasize the difference between the results in different kinds of rock, it is helpful to consider the relative mobility, Ar, which is the ratio of the measured absolute mobility to the rock permeability. The dimension of relative mobility is reciprocal centipoise, whereas absolute mobility is measured in (md/cp). 

A linear approach to predicting absolute oral bioavailability based on a single parameter, such as rate or extent of absorption (fraction of dose absorbed or estimated dose absorbed) or the rate of metabolism (microsomal or hepatic intrinsic clearance), may result in an inaccurate prediction. The linear approach will not reconcile the bioavailability for highly absorbed and highly metabolized drugs or for poorly absorbed and slowly metabolized drugs. Therefore, if either permeability...
