Steel slag

Physically, steel slag (SS) aggregates are highly angular in shape and have rough surface textures. They have a high bulk specific gravity and moderate water absorption (less than 3%). 

Steel slag is mildly alkaline, with a solution pH generally in the range of 8-10. However, the pH of leachate from steel slag can exceed 11, a level that can be corrosive to aluminum or galvanized steel pipes placed in direct contact with the slag.

Much along the same lines as the process described above, as proposed by Katsuyama et al. [57], Geerlings et al. recently described a process for producing CaC03 from various solid residues [58]. In this patent, two examples of the described process were described, one utilizing paper bottom ash and one steel slag, although neither example provided a reaction rate for the precipitation step. 

The extraction of calcium took place inside a water-filled, stirred reactor for 15 min, which resulted in a calcium hydroxide concentration of 1.1 gT1 for paper bottom ash and 0.46gT1 for steel slag. The formed hydroxide slurry was separated from the solids and carbonated by injecting it with C02 at a rate of 25 ml min-1. However, the feasibility of the process should be investigated with a cost and environmental assessment before any firm conclusions can be drawn, as was also the case for a process described by Gorset et al. [59]. 

The configuration chosen for the plant produces salable by-products, rather than waste products. The flyash from the plant is sold to a zinc smelter. The gypsum produced by the scrubber has been labeled by the state of California as appropriate for agricultural uses. It is sold as a soil conditioner. The steel slag from the plant is sold to a cement kiln for use in cement production.

Given the huge steel market, the vast majority of the slags produced come from iron or steel mills. Iron and steel slag is considered a valuable commodity, worth as much as U.S. 340 million in 2005. Approximately 60 percent of this commodity is from blast furnaces, and the remainder is from steel manufacturing...

Within the United States milling capacity is estimated at 19 million pounds of vanadium. A new producer has announced plans to enter the business in 1976, bringing domestic production capacity to 21.1 million pounds. These figures are well in excess of the 1973 estimated demand of 12.5 million pounds for the United States and Canada, and the production is adequate to satisfy the projected demand of 16.1 million pounds in 1980. In addition to basic vanadium oxide producers, a major domestic converter of ferro-vanadium is now producing millions of pounds of vanadium per year for sale in the United States from imported, duty free, steel slags.
