Steam injector

The efficiency of an ejecdor or jet pump is low, being only a few percent. The head developed by the ejector is also low except in special types. The device has the disadvantage of diluting the fluid pumped by mixing it with the pumping fluid. In steam injectors for boiler feed and similar seiwices in which the heat of the steam is recovered, efficiency is close to 100 percent. 

A continuous sterilizer with a steam injector and a flash cooler will be employed to sterilize medium continuously with the flow rate of 2 m3/hr. The time for heating and cooling is negligible with this type of sterilizer. The typical bacterial count of the medium is about...

The cooling section, Fig. 6, is of double pipe construction. Cooling water and sterile media pass countercurrently. The back pressure control valve (for sterilization) is located at the low point of the piping. A Masoneilon Camflex valve is a suitable design for this service. A steam bleed should be located on each side of this valve in order to sterilize the sterilizer forward from the steam injector and backward from the fermenter. 

To avert high-pressure blow-outs of plumbing and equipment, pressure gauges and pop-off valves should be installed in the following places (1) in the condenser to sense product pressure, (2) near the base of the stripping and rectifying column sections to sense internal column pressure, and (3) in the reboiler steam chamber or the steam injector nozzle to sense steam pressure being applied.

Gay-Lussac invented a portable barometer, a steam injector pump, a maximum and minimum thermometer for use in the sea, a modified Volta s eudiometer, and an air thermometer and a spirit blow-lamp. He adapted an ordinary furnace for use as a muffle furnace and described a new method of heating with charcoal impregnated with sodium carbonate.

There is a passive system for providing make up water in the event of a LOCA, the Emergency Coolant Injection System (ECIS). This uses steam injectors to pump water from the containment tanks into the RPV. The steam is taken from the top of the pressuriser. There is two times redundancy. This system can be combined with a bleed system to provide a second route for decay heat removal. Fig. 7.5.2. gives a schematic diagram of the safety systems and the nonsafety grade heat removal systems.
