Starting a Search

With a book, the contents should be checked for an index, a table of contents, a preface, and special instructions that may be entitled How to use this source. A site map or help section in an online resource serves a similar purpose. It should be noted that many online databases may be limited to a set group of subscribers, depending upon the license agreements, while others may be accessed for free. One element that is essential and common to most systems is that instructions should be understood before plunging into the contents, whether a book, a catalog, an index, an encyclopedia, or in searching online.

Once defined which kind of problematic, if it is a choice, ranking, sorting or a portfolio problem it will start a search of alternatives to compose the set of actions or alternatives. This step should be extensive and exhaustive to fill this set with as much alternatives as possible, except by those which can be previously considered as dominated alternatives. This is a quite important step, it avoids situation were good alternatives are neglected.

Discovery of isotactic polypropylene (PP) in 1954 started a search for methods to improve its low-temperature impact strength [1, 2]. The overall use of halogenated flame retardants is still showing an upward trend, but the above concerns have started a search for more environmentally friendly polymer additives. As a result it is quite possible that the future available flame retardants will be more limited than in the past. 

Very often at the beginning of an online search, you will only have a name or a Registry Number (RN). To start a search with a Registry Number already known is the easiest. The STN command language handles restrictions to certain fields of a document by adding the field qualifier behind the search term and a separating slash.
