Removal of Humic Substances

Humic substances (including humic add, fulvic acid, and humin) make up about 80% of soil organic matters in dark soils. Their presence in surface and groxmd water may produce toxic chemicals during disinfection [Pg.424]

A short column packed with an amine bonded polymer (weak anion exchange material) connected prior to the anion separation column was found to be very effective for the selective removal of humic substances prior to anion separation by ion chromatography. About 500 sample injections could be performed before breakthrough of humic substances occurred as indicated by ultraviolet measurements made on the eluate at 225nm. [Pg.52]

Odegaard and Koottatep (1982) report that higher-molecular-weight fractions are excluded well at low concentrations, but movement across the membrane occurs at higher concentrations. These authors report 80-100% removal of humic substances, as determined by color removal. However, reverse osmosis is an expensive, equipment-intensive method. [Pg.374]
