In a hormone-responsive endometrial cell line (ECC-1), a methanolic extract of heal all exhibited antiestrogenic activity. Specifically, a reduction in alkaline phosphatase activity and cell proliferation in response to estrogen in a dose-dependent manner was observed. The expression of an estrogen-induced protein was blocked in the cell line both by a standard antiestrogen compound and by the heal all extract (Collins et al. 2009). [Pg.702]

Standard Test Method for Adhesion Between Steel Tire Cords and Rubber. Steel cords are vulcanised into a block of mbber and the force necessary to pull the cords linearly out of the mbber is measured as adhesive force. ASTM method D2229-93a can be used for evaluating mbber compound performance with respect to adhesion to steel cord. The property measured by this test method indicates whether the adhesion of the steel cord to the mbber is greater than the cohesion of the mbber, ie, complete mbber coverage of the steel cord or less than the cohesion of mbber (lack of mbber coverage). [Pg.90]

Tamplin et. al. (54) observed that V. cholerae and A. hydrophila cell extracts contained substances with TTX-like biological activity in tissue culture assay, counteracting the lethal effect of veratridine on ouabain-treated mouse neuroblastoma cells. Concentrations of TTX-like activity ranged from 5 to 100 ng/L of culture when compared to standard TTX. The same bacterial extracts also displaced radiolabelled STX from rat brain membrane sodium channel receptors and inhibited the compound action potential of frog sciatic nerve. However, the same extracts did not show TTX-like blocking events of sodium current when applied to rat sarcolemmal sodium channels in planar lipid bilayers. [Pg.82]

Comparison of solution pH with the pKa of a side chain informs about the protonation state. A unique pKa, termed the standard or model pKa, can be experimentally determined for each ionizable side chain in solution when it is incorporated in a model compound, often a blocked amino acid residue [73] (Table 10-1). In a protein environment, however, the pKa value of an ionizable side chain can substantially deviate from the standard value, due to desolvation effects, hydrogen bonding, charge-charge, charge-dipole, and other electrostatic interactions with the... [Pg.262]

The materials selected for evaluation included three materials currently being used in these applications Biomer (Thoratec Laboratories Corporation, Emeryville, CA), representative of segmented ether-type polyurethanes Avcothane-51 (Avco Everett Research Laboratory, Inc., Everett, MA), a block copolymer of 10% silicone rubber and 90% polyurethane and Hexsyn (Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, Akron, OH), a sulfur vulcanized hydrocarbon rubber that is essentially a polyhexene. Also selected, because of their easy availability, were Pellethane (Upjohn Company, North Haven, CT), an ether-type of polyurethane capable of being extruded in sheet form, and a butyl rubber formulation, compounded and molded at the National Bureau of Standards. The material thickness varied, but the sheets were generally about 1 mm thick. [Pg.534]

Although zinc is formally a 4-block element, some of its chemical properties are similar to those of the alkaline earth metals, especially those of magnesium. This is mainly due to zinc s exclusive exhibition of the +2 oxidation state in all its compounds and its appreciable electropositive character. With a standard potential of —0.763 V, zinc is considerably more electropositive than copper and cadmium. [Pg.314]

In the adsorption with Tenax alone satisfactory results were obtained, while in the presence of mineral oil a considerable proportion of the organophos-phorus pesticides (particularly Malathion and Parathion-methyl) was not adsorbed and was recovered in the filtered water. This drawback can be overcome by adding a layer of Celite 545 which, in order to prevent blocking of the column, is mixed with silanised glass wool plugs. A number of analyses of surface and estuarine sea waters were carried out by this modified Tenax column and simultaneously by the liquid-liquid extraction technique. To some of the samples taken, standard mixtures of pesticides were also added, each at the level of 1 xg/l (i.e., in concentration from 13 to 500 times higher than that usually found in the waters analysed). One recovery trial also specifically concerned polychlorobiphenyls. The results obtained in these tests show that the two extraction methods, when applied to surface waters that were not filtered before extraction, yielded very similar results for many insecticides, with the exception of compounds of the DDT series, for which discordant results were frequently obtained. [Pg.422]

The preparation described here of 3-cyclopentene-1-carboxylic acid from dimethyl malonate and cis-1,4-dichloro-2-butene is an optimized version of a method reported earlier3 for obtaining this often used and versatile building block.6 The procedure is simple and efficient and requires only standard laboratory equipment. 3-Cyclopentene-1-carboxylic acid has previously been prepared through reaction of diethyl malonate with cis-1,4-dichloro(or dibromo)-2-butene in the presence of ethanolic sodium ethoxide, followed by hydrolysis of the isolated diethyl 3-cyclopentene-1,1-dicarboxylate intermediate, fractional recrystallization of the resultant diacid to remove the unwanted vinylcyclopropyl isomer, and finally decarboxylation.2>7 Alternatively, this compound can be obtained from the vinylcyclopropyl isomer (prepared from diethyl malonate and trans-1,4-dichloro-2-butene)8 or from cyclopentadiene9 or cyclopentene.10 In comparison with the present procedure, however, all these methods suffer from poor selectivity, low yields, length, or need of special equipment or reagents, if not a combination of these drawbacks. [Pg.100]
