Equipment-handling faciUties include any device used to convey or temporarily support equipment, or provide access for plant maintenance, eg, portable ladders, davits, A-frames, monorails, forklift vehicles, and cranes. 

A more modern method to check for loss of thickness in process piping is by ultrasonic testing (UT) or Sonaray. These are portable instruments used to check pipe thickness on-stream. Do not forget, though, that the thin elbow, the one that is sure to fail, is always out of reach unless a ladder can be found. And the inspector cannot find the ladder. The corrosion prevention strategy consisted of wrapping the valve with wax tape, along with use of magnesium anodes. The chamber was thoroughly cleaned and valves wrapped in wax tape, as shown in Figure 7.3. Since the chamber was entered for limited number of times the corroded ladder was left intact and enter with the restraining device and/or portable ladder. 

The elevation of a line can also be influenced by valves and instruments in the line. Often a more convenient access platform can be provided for valves arranged in the top yard bank. The preferred location of lines Avith orifice runs is near the edge of the yard with orifice flanges near a yard column, for more convenient portable ladder access.

Circumstances of the accident One day in Autumn 1993 Rhys was participating in a gymnastics lesson when he fell from a ladder supported by a fixed and portable apparatus frame and broke his arm. At the time, Rhys was performing what is known as a low impact movement, which involved climbing the apparatus. The medical report indicates that when climbing the ladder Rhys s hands were somewhat slippery and he slipped off the climbing ladder. Rhys claims that he was at the top of the ladder and intended to climb over the top of the frame to the other side. Mr C claims that the general policy is that children do not climb over the top of the frame because of the wires.

Portable ladders are very common on most construction jobsites. They re used by electricians, roofers, plumbers, and just about any trades person trying to get to a higher elevation. 

When portable ladders are used to get to an upper landing sruface, the side rails must extend three feet above the upper landing. If that is not possible because of the ladders length, then it must be tied-oflf at the top to a non-moveable support, and a grab rail must be provided for getting off and on. The extension can never be so short that ladder deflection rmder a load would cause the ladder to shp off its support. 

A portable ladder with defects such as, but not hmited to broken or missing rungs, cleats, or steps broken or split rails corroded or other faulty or defective components, must either be immediately marked to easily identify it as defective, or be tagged with Do Not Use or similar language, and be withdrawn from use until repaired. 

When portable ladders are used to get to an upper landing surface, the side rails must extend at least three feet above the upper landing.

Portable ladders, hook-on ladders, attachable ladders, scaffold stairways, stairway-t3rpe ladders (such as ladder stands), ramps, walkways, integral prefabricated scaffold access, or equivalent means or... 

Portable, hook-on, and attachable ladders — It is critical that portable, hook-on, and attachable ladders are (1) positioned so as not to tip the scaffold, (2) positioned so the bottom rung is not more than 24 inches above your starting point, and (3) equipped with a rest platform at 35-foot maximum vertical intervals. 

If using portable, hook-on, and attachable ladders, make sure they are positioned so as not to tip the scaffold. 

When scaffold platforms are more than 2 feet above or below a point of access, portable ladders, hook-on ladders, attachable ladders, stair towers (scaffold stairways/towers), stairway-type ladders (such as ladder stands), ramps, walkways, integral prefabricated scaffold access, or direct access from another scaffold, structure, personnel hoist, or similar surface shall be used. Crossbraces shall not be used as a means of access. 

Types There are many types of ladders. They are classified by material of construction (wood, metal), load capacity, function and design. Some ladders are classified as type I, II, or in, depending on the standard loads (200,225, and 250 lb) used for certain tests. Most ladders are manufactured and sold for use. However, some ladders are job-made ladders, assembled at job sites. Ladders can be portable or fixed in place. Common types of portable ladders are step, platform, straight and extension ladders. Multipurpose ladders adjust to serve as several single-purpose ladders. Some ladders, such as those on truck trailers, have custom designs to fit around other design elements. There are many standards for ladder construction.
