At 10Hz in a typical Nd-YAG laser 1000Hz/- /Hz, and the typical finesse asymmetry is of the order of one percent. In order to detect a gw signal the laser frequency noise has to be lowered by six orders of magnitudes (compared to the noise of a free running laser), and the two arms made as identical as possible. In order to achieve this complex frequency stabilization methods are employed in all interferometric detectors, and in order to insure the perfect symmetry of the interferometer, all pairs of Virgo optical components are coated during the same run (both Fabry-Perot input mirrors then both end mirrors are coated simultaneously). [Pg.322]

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is researching technologies for the stabilization and immobilization of fly ash contaminated with radionuclides and metals that will reduce waste material volume and consistently satisfy regulatory requirements. The Mixed Waste Focus Area (MWFA), a DOE/EM-50 program, has stated the need for improved stabilization methods that would accept higher ash waste loadings. To address these issues, the MWFA has invested in a sintered ceramic stabilization technique developed by Clemson University. [Pg.467]

Compared to land-filling and stabilization methods, the equipment required is more complex. [Pg.739]

During bench-scale studies on ACT using sediments from the New Bedford Harbor Superfund Site, the Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure (TCLP) concentrations of many contaminants increased or remained unchanged following treatment. Based on these results, researchers stated that solidification/stabilization methods such as ACT were not appropriate for the treatment of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) or semivolatile organic compounds (SVOCs) at the site. The study also indicated that the compressive strength of ACT [45 to 80 pounds per square inch (psi)] was relatively low compared to other solidification/stabilization materials that were tested. [Pg.767]

Depending on the specific reagent needed to treat the target contaminant(s), ACT may be more expensive than other stabilization methods (D22737M, p. 6). [Pg.767]

A cumulative success of artificial ion-channel functions by simple molecules may disclose a wide gate for the design of ion channels and possible applications to ionics devices. Incorporation of these channels into bilayer lipid membrane systems may trigger the developments towards ionics devices. The conventional BLM system, however, is not very stable, one major drawback for the practical applications, and some stabilization methods, such as impregnating the material in micro-porous polycarbonate or polyester filters, are required. On the other hand,... [Pg.202]

According to the stabilization method used in German factories, after primary stabilization in boilers, the nitrocellulose was subjected to a short kiering in autoclaves made from acid-resistant steel with a hot-water circulation (Fig. 153). [Pg.396]

There are many questionable points in this description. To begin with, the dilution of the batch by plunging into water is uneconomic. This can also easily cause denitration of the product owing to local overheating. A stabilization method that omits boiling does not, in general, yield a product of satisfactory stability. [Pg.432]

One of the nitrostarch stabilization methods worked out by Hackel and T. Ur-banski (unpublished) consisted in giving the nitrostarch a very finely divided form so as to make it possible for water to invade the interior of the nitrostarch granules. It is, in fact, a method very similar in principle to the process of stabilizing nitrocellulose, since the fundamental operation in the latter consists in cutting the nitrocotton fibres into shorter pieces so as to open the interior of the fibres and permit water to penetrate. [Pg.432]

The proposed model consists of a biphasic mechanical description of the tissue engineered construct. The resulting fluid velocity and displacement fields are used for evaluating solute transport. Solute concentrations determine biosynthetic behavior. A finite deformation biphasic displacement-velocity-pressure (u-v-p) formulation is implemented [12, 7], Compared to the more standard u-p element the mixed treatment of the Darcy problem enables an increased accuracy for the fluid velocity field which is of primary interest here. The system to be solved increases however considerably and for multidimensional flow the use of either stabilized methods or Raviart-Thomas type elements is required [15, 10]. To model solute transport the input features of a standard convection-diffusion element for compressible flows are employed [20], For flexibility (non-linear) solute uptake is included using Strang operator splitting, decoupling the transport equations [9],... [Pg.208]
