The most intriguing aspect of the self-spreading lipid bilayer is that any molecule in the bilayer can be transported without any external bias. The unique characteristic of the spreading layer offers the chance to manipulate molecules without applying any external biases. This concept leads to a completely non-biased molecular manipulation system in a microfluidic device. For this purpose, the use of nano-space, which occasionally offers the possibility of controlling molecular diffusion dynamics, would be a promising approach. [Pg.233]

Figure 6.4 Cross-section through a dry reagent slide for use in the Vitros Chemistry System, previously known as the Kodak Ektachem analyser. A range of slides, which vary in the nature, number and composition of the layers, is available for a variety of analytes in blood serum. The sample (approximately 10 /d) is applied to the spreading layer and reactions take place as it permeates through the various layers. Detection is by reflectance photometry. With these facts in mind, let us examine the fate of the drop of solution placed on the surface of water. The initial spreading coefficient S0/fV (Equation (6.61)) for the organic layer on water is positive. This is primarily because yQ/w is unusually low and yw is high, even with an adsorbed layer of the organic solvent. After spreading, we allow sufficient time to elapse for all the solvent to evaporate from the spread layer. At this point the surface will contain a... [Pg.300]

In this method the slices are produced by first spreading layers of powdered material onto a surface, foUowed by selective deposition of a liquid composition onto the powder layer surface. The hquid composition, which is deposited by Inkjet, binds the powder particles together to form a solid but fragile material. [Pg.259]

In this technique, slices are produced by the repeated process of spreading layers of a powdered material and selectively fusing parts of each layer by laser beam. Here, the non-fused powder serves as support, resulting at the end of the building process, an object immersed in the non-fused powder. [Pg.261]
